Move Sound Suppressors to Title I!

I have been trying to make educational grpahics, will make Flash movies soon as well. If anyone has ideas that need illustrating, please let me know.

How small of a nibble do you want?
A nibble small enough to ensure we don't get a negative backlash. Maybe this time we get the tax reduced to $5 (creating more owners). Maybe next time we get the CLEO signoff removed (creating even more owners). More and more owners, more and more political clout.

wdlsguy, I would guess that most people out there who want a suppressor but don't have one, don't have one because they can't get a signoff, not because they can't scrounge up $195. Yeah, you can do the LLC or trust thing, but that's a whole lot of work compared to just buying a title I gun.

Some people complain about the tax, other people complain about the CLEO signoff.

It is very easy to set up a living trust using Quicken WillMaker.

With a living trust, the NFA paperwork is very straightforward, and approvals are taking weeks instead of months these days. Don't let the perceived difficulty stop you from enjoying the weapon of your choice.

If NFA items are legal in your state, that is. Suppressors are illegal in far too many states. Much better to move them to Title I "for the children"

If it saves one child's hearing... :)

Good luck passing a federal law that says states have to allow suppressor ownership.
If you want your federal money you have to allow suppressors. The Fed has found hearing loss due to gunfire to be easily preventable, so you must allow suppressors. If the state doesn't you don't get any CDC distributed monies for public health services.

In fiscal 95, the CDC distributed nearly $2,000,000,000 to the states for public health services.

Kapeesh? :D

Title 1? Title zero. I don't need a NICS check to buy a scope - why do I need one for a suppressor? It's harmless without a gun behind it.

Give them time. One of the steps towards banning "sniper rifles" will be background checks on scopes.

Preemption will sink the proposal.

Forcing California to accept silencers as legal will go over like a fart in a church.

None of this is being decided here. If you two don't like the title I with preemption proposal, write your Congressman and tell him to vote against it. :scrutiny:

You are writing to your Congressman (and the NRA-ILA, etc.) about this issue, right?

To that end, it would be a good idea to find out just what the annual health costs to treat hearing damage are.

How much money is being spent by federal health suppliers and insurance companies to treat this preventable hearing damage?

Hearing aids aren't cheap, and I'll bet the figure is surprisingly large.

It should NOT be included except to the extent to cover silencer owners whose state laws require silencers be registered with the BATFE to be legal.

Marginalize the California gun haters from the beginning.

No doubt.

One of the things that I find continually infuriating about the gun rights movement is the amount of infighting and bickering over how things should be done.

In my experience, the best brainstorming sessions consist of throwing out a bunch of ideas, and continuing to fixate on good concepts instead of blocking ideas that you consider to be bad. Bad ideas will fall by the wayside all on their own.

In regards to federal preemption, I think it would be a good idea to include it, and if nothing else, it becomes a bargaining chip. If they howl too loudly, we say "ok, how about removing the federal preemption requirement and leaving it up to the states. That's a reasonable compromise."

I have an LLC with 8 title II firearms registered to it, so it hasn't stopped me. However, you have to admit that even by using an LLC or trust to eliminate the CLEO signoff, title II transfers are still a huge PITA compared to a title I transfer. If we're going to work on reforming the NFA, I'd rather spend time doing something a little more substantial than just saving a little money on the transfer tax.

Ok, I'm suprised nobody has thought of this yet...or atleast posted it. IIRC, in the beginning of the post, we were looking for organizations to back us on this. Why not go straight to the Manufacturers and get them to back us? If we could get suppressors moved to Title I, they'd most likely sell alot more of them, which would put more money in their pockets. Everybody would win here. We'd get our hearing protection and they'd get their money.

That's a dang good idea.

I'm a dealer for TacInv, OpsInc, Advanced Armament, and AWC. I will be seeing all of these people in January at SHOT, and I can mention these ideas in person.

Or hopefully if El Tejon had something more official organized by then, it would be good information to pass on.

Of course, if we have a Democrat congress at that point, it would probably be a moot point.

More about how important silence is in committing crime:
Eryc Fults, 39, who lives a few houses away from the victim, heard shots, but thought they were wood pallets being dropped up the street. He learned later that the woman had shot a suspected burglar.

http://www.dailynews.com/santaclarita/ci_4511813

See, even unmuffled shots are always assumed to be something else. People just rationalize it because they both dont expect a gunfight and dont want to have to deal with one.

Even large bombs are assumed to be something else unless people see smoke/fire. I was 2 blocks away from the 93 WTC bombing and I thought someone had dropped a girder at a nearby construction site. I only realized it was a bomb a few hours later when every cop car and ambulance in NYC was parked across the street. Like hundreds of them on an empty lot and down every side street.

Loki, sure, we need all the help we can get. However, do not be surprised if you receive no response or a hostile response. Remember, (some) people are in the gun business to tell other people "no!" The Title II hoops give those types an enormous rush of superiority and they will fight you tooth and nail in giving it up.

I believe it is within our best interests to concentrate on the NRA, GOA, inter alia. We have let people know that this is what we want.:)

Those interested should check out SilencerTests.com. I started a thread there linking back to this one.
Owners of several silencer manufacturing compaines hang out there, and it's run by Rob Silvers who has done more for promoting the industry than anyone in recent years.

Lists, and things

We should get together a list of silencer manufacturers, and start a nice mail campaign. And another list of what all needs done. Maybe El Tejon could get another pinned thread started that just he posts to?

Preemption?

"Any provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof that is in conflict with the purposes and intention of this act is declared null and void after enactment of this paragraph into law. Any person charged with violating such laws of any State or political subdivision thereof before this paragraph was made law, shall still be held liable for such actions and may be punished accordingly under state, federal and local statutes."

I've briefly talked with a few politicals about this; they've all but laughed at me when I explained that suppressors are hearing protection... :banghead:
