I completely understand how a lot of you won't be terribly impressed with this target...

But you have to understand that I have ALWAYS been a pistol guy. My long gun skills have been more than adequate to meet the needs of hunting (shots within 6" or so at 100 yards, but I have never pretended that I was a precision long gun shooter.

This week I went out to the range and the bench I was sitting at had a broken seat that shifted a bit while I was taking aim. It caused me to move my body and my shoulder in a way I hadn't before and suddenly I felt the rifle "settle in". I was then able to put 4 rounds of 5.56 (from a Ruger SR556) nearly touching each other at 100 yards...several times. Something I had never even come close to before.

So for my next target set I decided I was going to shoot once and move to the next target until I finished so that I could see what happened if each shot required a little re-adjustment. The result was the target above (each black circle is about 1.5") The second shot (1 o'clock) on the bottom target was just because I had one round left in the mag).

Yeah I know there are lots of people out there who can do better, some a LOT better, but for me this was a MAJOR step forward and all due to a broken seat on a bench

Not bad. Rifle and sights/scope specs? What ammo; brand, bullet weight, etc?

Rifle precision even non match shooting is very fun. It becomes an inner challenge to shoot better groups. Figuring out best bullet weight/twist combos, barrel length, barrel profile, etc, etc. The science of precision rifle can be fun easy or fun very complex. Baby steps. I consider myself a novice at best, but i am learning as well.

very nice shooting! i'd be surprised if anyone could do better than that. rugers aren't exactly benchrest guns :) i think you got a good one

  • Ruger SR556 [stock, no mods for accuracy]
  • NCStar, STR3942G, 3-9x42 Illuminated Red/Green Rangefinder Scope (review here)
  • Handloaded 5.56 (Berrys 55gr #349-885 bulk/26.2gr Varget chrono 3100fps)
  • 100 yards measured (at my shooting club)
  • Almost no wind, about 82 degrees.
  • Bench rest was a seat and table and a carpet covered block of wood for a riser.

If that Berrys is a 55 Gr FMJ (Open base) you can do much better with a open tip bullet such as a HP, SP, plastic tip, etc. The square base will shoot lights out better than a FMJ with an irregular base.

That would be dang good shooting with FMJs. :)

Yes they are the "cup" hollow based bullets. I got a great deal on them a long while back so I have 1k of them to burn through <grin>. Well, at this point I actually have about 600 of them left.

I also have about 500 speer hollow-point/flat based "something or other" (I'm not going out to the shop to look). Maybe I'll have to load some of them and test them as well now that my skill level makes it worth the while!
