My wife is trying to remember an old movie. There's this guy, maybe Jimmy Stewart, and he invents a gun and she thinks he invents it while serving time in jail.

True story. He invented the short-stroke piston concept that was incorporated in the M-1 carbine. Contrary to popular stories he did not design the M-1 carbine only the gas system that was used in it. He designed and built the prototype while in prison on bootlegging charges.
