So, in just a short while longer I'll be moving to CT from MA - not much of a step up, but something!

What are the laws concerning "assault weapons" and the like?

Third Rail,
I too moved from MA to CT except I went through VT.

Search the forums here. There was a long list of articles posted about CT.

CT banned some semi auto rifles. AK-47 look a like in 7.62x54? is banned. Some AR 15 rifles, galil, FAL and their copies are banned. YOu can get a AK-47 that takes .223 ammo. Go figure on that one.

CCW is ok, but depends on the town. 8 weeks is the max they can take to process your paperwork but waits of 12 weeks and up isn't uncommon. After the town does your paper work, you have a worthless Temporary Permit (you can buy anything with it) good for 30 days until you get a 4 or 5 year permit at certain State Police barracks that are only open certain hours. Cost over all is cheaper than MA.

So you can't buy pistols/rifles/shotguns without a permit? That's no worse than MA, but no better unfortunately. Also unfortunate on the FALs, etc. - I've been wanting one of those. Oh well.

EDIT: I searched but couldn't find anything useful other than this tidbit... I can't go to a range without a CCW? And I can't get one until I'm 21.... so I can't really go to the range until then, or am I wrong? (please let me be wrong)

Anyone with experience on the laws, please chime in.

EDIT 2: This seems to sum up the laws. It seems I'm in a little bit worse situation than here in MA! I didn't know what I was getting in to - most if not all of the fun stuff is banned - just like MA; but now I have to put up with a waiting period?

Bump. This is really bothering me - my wife loves to go to the range, so it's not good if I'm right.

I don't know about waiting until 21 to go to the range (via a CHL), but the only thing that's banned is the 7.62x39 cartridge and any rifle that fires it. I have been to plenty CT firearms stores, including one last month, and they had everything for sale: AK rifles in .223 or 5.45, AR-15 rifles, semi-auto shotguns, high-cap pistols and mags, et cetera. Get your CHL and you can buy with impunity, no waiting periods either.

It may suck if you're under 21 but that can't last forever.

I'd have to say that once you get to 21 it's much better than Massachusetts.

Well, I'm only going to be there for two years. One of those years (and a bit more) I'll be 21... so it's not too bad. I read something about a hunting license exempting me from a waiting period? How does that work?

Anyone with experience about the range/age question, do chime in. :)

packing.org check Connecticut laws. You don't need a permit for a long gun, only handguns. The permit is good for 5 yrs. And it is more or less a shall issue state. If a locality denies you, you can appeal to the Connecticut Board of Firearms.. No where near as bad here as Mass from what I have read.

it's not too bad in CT

hi 3rd rail, I live in Ct and it isn't too awful. To buy a pistol you need a permit. With that all you have to do is pass the insta-check and you can buy the gun. I don't know the age limit for pistol permits. It is a concealed carry permit, that is the only one issued. But the state is shall issue even if some of the local police don't want to issue permits.
As for rifles you can buy them without a permit or a hunting license if you wait for 2 weeks. There is a list of "evil" guns. AK types, AR's with certain features, FAL's , semi-auto tommy guns, and more. If you have them and they aren't registered they aren't grandfathered if you move into the state.
There is an old thread called " Connecticut?" by a guy named Ready on the Right which had a lot of good links in it. As for ranges my local indoor range won't rent guns or let anyone shoot without 1 person having a permit, but I don't think the out door range has that rule.
If you are in the area send me a PM and we can go shooting. There are a few CT highroaders who seem to be great guys you will be welcomed here.

There is other firearms info in the left-side navigation on that page.

Best of luck!

So, those and only those are banned in CT?

Funny, they left out the most obvious stuff (AR-15, etc.)
