Well I got a job at White Sands, so I will be leaving my temporary home of South Texas.

Im happy to get back close to West Texas though.

I have already looked through websites and New Mexico's gun laws, but I figured I would rather hear it from you guys.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One thing is for sure, I am going to keep my Texas CHL, and I want to get a New Mexico CHL.
But do I need to notify the state of Texas that I am moving?

I also noticed that the New Mexico CHL is only available to residents, how long do I have to be in New Mexico before I can obtain the CHL?

How do the LEO's respond to people carrying?
It seems like the majority of the community here near Corpus is anti-gun.

Well guys wish me luck.

At some time in the not-too-distant future, I'll be making the move to NM, too. An old friend and ex-cop who lives there tells me it's a "castle doctrine" state much like Texas. Meaning you don't need a license to carry a loaded handgun in your vehicle. And NM has reciprocity with Texas on the CHL, so your license will be valid there until you get a NM residency.

you might want to check with the sheriff that issued you your CHL. I can only speak for living here in Colorado, but even moving within the state here you have 90 days to notify the issuing office of your CCW of your new address. Failure to do so can result in revocation of your permit.

let us know - especially myself - how things are gonna work out or are working out for you over there in New Mexico with fire arm regulations and permits - everything to do with possesion of and carrying a gun or rifle as I will be relocating there next year. I wont live anywhere that does not honor my second amendment fully and will not allow for ccw ?
hope it all works for your (and mine) advantage buddy

Well Captain,
One thing you want to do is stay away from Santa Fe!!!!!:barf:
That is where the rich and leftwing Californians or Kalifornians(Mexifornaians)
move to when they get done corrupting a state to the point its almost unlivable:banghead:

I don't know about down south but up near Farmington we love out 2A, and have world class range to shoot at.
We have Cowboy action, IDPA, IPSC, Single Action Shooting, Clay, Long range BP, and some I be leaving out.

You'll get to hunt Oryx at Whitesands. Put in for it next January. Pat Garret's old ranch is just north of the highway on a dirt road in the foothills of the Organ Mnts., part of the missle range now.
I shot an oryx near there last year.

I lived in Alamogordo and worked on White Sands back in the early 60s, so I can't tell you much about the present status of the laws. Good country. I think you will enjoy it.

I had responsibility for communications at Oscura Range Camp and North Oscura Peak with back up responsibility for the site at the air base.

Pops

Captain good luck there you will like it. Are you planning on living in Las Cruces or El Paso? And are you working at the Missile Range or at the NASA facility?

By the way, read up on those NM carry laws. If I remember correctly you cannot carry into a restaurant serving alcohol and they don't have to post any signs. If you need any further advice PM me, we spent 20 years there and are now in Houston.

Well I was born in El Paso, so it will be nice to get back home, most of my family on both parents sides live there still.

Actually I have been debating whether to live in Las Cruces or in El Paso, specifically because of income tax reasons, but I cant get a straight answer from anybody on this issue.

I am going to be working on the NASA test facility.

Yea I saw that you couldnt carry into a restaurant serving alcohol, weird.

yea I heard about all the californians trying to get out of the state they already ruined, haha.

Well I did alot of research and it seems like you have to live 180 days in NM to be considered a resident, and it has similar procedure to get your CHL as Texas, but the renewal class is way shorter and cheaper.

I would live in Cruces. If El Paso is like every other city in Texas, your property tax will more than make up for the state income tax. Did for me anyway.

Good deal on the NASA test facility, I worked there for 20 something years before coming to the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Are you working for NASA or one of the contractors?

And you will file NM state taxes. If you have the situation where your wife works in Texas and you work in NM and you live in Texas look at the NM taxation and revenue web site and look for forum PIT-B New Mexico Allocation and Apportionments of income. It show how to break out the incomes. If you PM me I can give you emails of people who work at the test facility and live in El Paso that would help you with any questions of this sort.

And I prefer Las Cruces to live but houses are more expensive

Im gonna be working for Jacobs Engineering, well MEI Tech.

Well Im not married yet, haha, but next year I probably will be.

Where do you work at JSC? I know a few people over there.
Las Cruces is closer, but high rent, and El Paso is farther but lower rent.

So we will see. Im going back next month to see places to live. Im probably gonna just get an apartment for now, and then in a year or so start looking for a house.

Thanks for the link Whole Hog
