Moving to Oregon

Yep, just get yourself a good map of the Mt. Hood National Forest. From Gresham, head south through Estacada, then take HWY 224 East. Within a few minutes, you cross over the Clackamas River and into National Forest. Find the right gravel roads of the highway and you'll hit pretty decent shooting pits every 1/4 mile or so.

For the best scenery in the entire state, and by far the best shooting, head out to the Central Oregon area. Here you have the towns of Sisters, Redmond, and Bend. Juniper trees, ponderosa pine, sage brush, the Metolius and Deschutes Rivers, snow-capped rugged peaks of the Cascades, and more BLM land than a shooter knows what to do with!

Really? In what way? I live in CA and, beside the difficulty with getting a CCW, I think it gets a bad rap in comparison to some of the other states.

However, I don't think OR is one of those other states. :)

I was driving though Bend a few years ago and there were signs for stores with the promo "Win a Gun!" to get people to come inside. You don't see that in CA. :D

So totally legal to just haul out the ordnance to the roadside drive in and mow down the cardboard zombies ?

really ?
On National Forest land, yes, you can mow down the cardboard zombies. National Forest land is less than one hour from Portland. The further you go, the more remote it gets and with few city folk around.

Yes, there are laws and there are common sense "rules", like don't shoot in "developed areas", like campgrounds, and don't shoot across roads, and don't litter, etc.

In other words, be responsible. Don't be an idiot. Don't be a slob. You'll love it.

Oregon is worse than California!!!!!!
LIES!!!! Oregon has some of the best gun laws in the USA! Please do research before make bold and fallacious statements like these. Oregon is one of the few states you can go into a bar , have a beer and conceal legally. Also, getting a CCW in most of Oregon is as simple as a 1 hour class and an application. In Oregon you can own any type of gun that exists in today's market, including Class III SBR/SBS, Suppressors, etc.

Even many so -called right-wing Southern states have way more restrictive gun laws than Oregon.

So now, all pro-2A people, please pack your bags and come here. Lets keep all the anti-2A away from this fine and beautiful state.

BTW.. The most beautiful scenery in Oregon is not in central Oregon, but rather in the Columbia Gorge and Mt HOod area. THe scenery really is unbeatable in the Gorge. Also, there is a very inexpensive and almost empty range in The Dalles area, as well as other places to shoot. I'm moving to the Gorge and look forward to having Tri County about 1.5 hour away and The Dalles Club right nearby.

The Gorge also hosts all the giant waterfalls and views of Mt Adams, Mt Hood and St Helens.. Bend, is nice, I lived there for a year, but didn't care for the place or the scenery. It's bit deserty and the icy cold and wet weather in the winter makes shooting tough. The COSSA range about 45min-1 hour east of Bend is dirt cheap and almost always empty. They have 1000yd shooting there I believe.

Congratulations on moving to Oregon. I'm sure you'll enjoy your new found freedom, especially since it is such a contrast from CA. We don't have a DOJ firearms roster, we don't discriminate against "assault" weapons, your sheriff shall issue a CCW permit. It is great!

Just want to make an update :

The english pit has removed their stated intent to turn you into a felon and take your guns away by removing brass.

I grew up there. It's really several states within one border. Southern, eastern, coast and valley are all distinct climate and politics-wise.

If you're looking at the Portland area I had the pleasure of visiting Douglas Ridge a few years ago. Very nice people, and a solid facility. IIRC there are shelters and a very nice long range.

It's considerably less open to firearms than Alaska, but quite a bit more open than California.

Don't forget what else is in Oregon:

Gun Restrictions ON STEROIDS
Oregon is worse than California!!!!!!
:scrutiny:

Oh really?

I just saw that statement and will say without any reservation - that is flat out one of the DUMBEST things I've ever seen anybody say around here.

Having once lived in California prior to moving to Oregon 30+ years ago - it just ain't so. There's no comparison. Overall, Oregon is very gun friendly.

If it wasn't, I'd be planning a move to somewhere else.

I lived on the Oregon southern coast for about 15 years. There were any number of National Forest sites nearby that were great places to practice. My favorite, though, was off of an access road to the beach and sand dunes - private, remote and yet only 15 minutes from my house. The gun laws are very unrestrictive. I bought and sold any number of rifles and handguns through private sales and gun shops and gun shows with ease. I was born and raised in SoCal and it breaks my heart to see what it has become. I will never move back - Texas is home. Good luck on your move!!

Please take note, If you happen to move to Portland please become a member of a range. There are to many city slickers and white trash that think dumping trash and shooting television sets are ok because they simply will not see it again:cuss: sorry for the rant but shooting on NF lands is not an excuse for being a trashy person IE: leaving targets, backers, brass:cuss: even .22rimfire, cans, bottles.sorry for the rant once again but I make my living in the National Forests and I see alot of this type of thing first hand and have for years.

I would also like to welcome yet another Californian to Oregon, please don't make this like the state you just left. Vote accordingly or leave please:)

Couplea things....

I did move here some time ago, its not new now :)

I only reposted in this'n to remark that the english pit had changed their posting of rules, which used to state that removing even a single piece of brass, while in possession of a firearm, turns that misdemeanor into a felony- and that they would urge prosecution.

I lived in portland, but moved. Was a member of the PGC for a short time...really neat to shoot trap in the middle of the "burbs" that was a cool experience.

Not there anymore. Now I shoot BLM land. If you are concerned as to my range habits...look through a few of the older posts since I arrived... I'm in the business of exporting trash from the sites- not importing it.

FWIW : I wasn't a CA resident my whole life... I didn't create that mess, I did however flee it as fast as my life would allow it.

Voting is tricky, but I seem to like it pretty much the way it is- if I didn't, I wouldn't have come here in the first place.... I have no desire to change that.

Well, I know the ranges I've checked out in Portland and Salem areas. Salem has some decent clubs. It's nothing compared to Arizona though which is where I just came from. I'm trying to get out of Oregon though, I really hate living here. It's not what I thought it was gonna be like. I can't shoot anywhere I want to like az, and the fishing rules are insane. I'd much rather live in the Midwest where I can still buy 30 to 50 acres for 250 300 grand. Put my own range on it etc. I hope you like it here. It's just not for me. I can't stand these leftist states.

Blarby, right on man a little insight goes along way:)

I guess i just don't like it when several folks recommend going and shooting in the "woods" and leave out the fact that it simply cant be treated like a scuzzy range::fire: a personal issue I guess but it seems to be prevalent as of the last 15 years throughout the west.
