Moving to Raleigh, NC and need some intel.

One note for a new NC resident is that there are "interesting" rules on how to transport guns in a vehicle.

The guidance is longish, so I will just post the opening words. I strongly recommend you read the entire section 3.4 from https://ncsheriffs.org/wp-content/u...s-Publication-with-Attachments-April-2022.pdf. In other sections of this document are most all of the state specific rules on guns that you need to know.

3.4 Transporting Weapons

Given the general prohibition of carrying concealed weapons, individuals must be ever vigilant to ensure their particular situation cannot be construed as concealing a weapon, either on or about them, without being properly authorized to do so with a valid North Carolina or recognized out-of-state concealed handgun permit. Therefore, the permittee’s accessibility to the weapon is of prime importance. It is unlawful to transport a weapon (absent a proper permit) that is BOTH concealed and readily accessible to a person. It is for these reasons, that when transporting a weapon in a vehicle, even greater care must be exercised to ensure that the weapon is not concealed and within the ready access to an occupant of the vehicle.

Back before everyone and their brother had a carry permit....the often accepted safest way to transport was the gun plainly in sight on the dash. I always hated that method but it certainly couldn't be called concealed and readily accessible.

I'm outside the city limits, but still have a Raleigh address. Last time I got permits was years ago and at the time the Wake Co. Sheriff could (and would) make you wait 60 days (or was it 90?) for approval. Got a CHP in large part to avoid that. Sounds like that is no longer an issue, so that's good. Here is the current Wake Co. pistol permit page: https://www.wakegov.com/departments...s/administration/wcso-pistol-purchase-permits There's a CHP link on that page as well.

There are some decent ranges and stores, and also some I avoid. Given my location and the traffic in the area, it makes an hour at the range around a four-hour process, counting drive and wait times. I can tell you that the visibility of the gun community and general attitude of the population varies drastically with which part of Raleigh or the adjacent communities you settle in. PM me if you would like.

The full size b29 needed to have 75% hit rate in the black (which would be nearly impossible to miss at 7 yards) They later dropped the 1 yard.

They still had the one yard when I took my class. I was 24/25.., Missed the final shot at one yard because I was using .45 ACP +P and the prior muzzle blasts had the target flying nearly horizontally. Left a several inch long elliptical hole, complete with powder burns, in the lower center of the target - just outside the black. The instructor didn't even try to keep a straight face.
