My son and I had one come to our camp, the same year that the boy was eaten in Idaho Springs. We frequently go on a quest for brookies and cutthroat in high alpen lakes. The only thing that kept the cat at bay, as he was twenty yards from our camp, was our dog, that had come unglued and sounded like a badass. I slept with the camp axe on my chest all night.
The following year that we went to the same area there was a couple from California, each with a sidearm. All they could ask was are there any cats up here? I of course told them of our experience, and I remembering admiring their sensability at being armed in the backcountry.
Our trips are frequently 5 days . and there is no nearby help. It seems some Californians have common sense , but their government does not. Anyone remember the the story of the jogger that was eaten in California. I remember reading the story in Outdoorlife , and what struck me was how they raised more money for the kittens of the lion they killed , than they did for the surviving children of the lady, who was mauled!
