Most people know that you can fire .38 Special in a .357 Magnum, and .44 Special in a .44 Magnum. There's the .454 Casull that will fire .45 Long Colt. What other commercially made ammo can be fired in guns chambered for other commercially made cartridges ? I don't want to include wildcats but if you know of something interesting feel free to include it.

First, what can be fired. Second, leave your opinion or experiences of doing that.

Thank you to all that reply.

There are a number of such combinations in straight wall cases.
Revolvers are easy.
.32 S&W - .32 S&W Long - .32 H&R Magnum - .327 Ruger Magnum.
.38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .357 Maximum
.44 Russian, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .445 Supermag

For something a little esoteric
.22 ILARCO*, .22 WRF, .22 WRM.
*Made for more power and reliability in the American 180 .22 SMG.

There have been a lot of .45-70s shot in .45-90 rifles before the BPCR hobby got correct brass back in production.

I think most such things except for the Special-in-Magnum are Trivial Pursuits or deep emergency substitutions.

Taurus Judge - Cahmbered for .45 Colt but also fires .410 shotshells.

Then there's things like, .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle.

460 S&W, 454 casull, 45 colt, 45 scholfield, and i can't remeber the last one.

There are single cartridge adapters that allow rounds like .32 ACP to be fired in .308, .30-06, and .30-30, and .22LR in .223, etc. Fives you high posered rifle a quieter, less powerful round to take small game with.

Can 45 ACP be fired in any .45 cal. revolvers by using moonclips ? ( Other than the ones designed for .45 ACP).

to clarify, moonclips can only be used in guns that have cylinder to frame gaps wide enuf to accept them. lots of 455 webleys were converted to this use.

lots of late 19th century european military guns such as 11.4 mauser can shoot cut down 45 colt or similar cartridges.

303 brit can be fired in 7.62X54R. 30 krag can be fired in 303 brit. 303 savage and 30-30 share a similar relationship, but i can't remember which way.

360 rook can accept cut down 38 spcl.

there are charts on the net with detailed dimensional listings that can make shooting lots of antique oddball guns simple by reloading slightly modified modern brass.

Not sure exactly what you're saying here. You can get almost any modern revolver cut to accept moon clips. The rear of the cylinder is relieved to allow the moon clip to fit flush with the rear face. The cylinder to frame gap doesn't change.

Maybe I missed your point?

-Sam

You can also safely shoot the following cartridges out of a .45ACP revolvers:
.45ACP (needs moonclips/half moonclips)
.45GAP (needs moonclips/half moonclips) [only if the .45ACP revolver is rated for +P ammo]
.45AutoRim

I modified a .357 sizing die to size a loaded 9mm cartridge (without modification, the cases base would not be sized enough), and then shot it in a ruger gp100.
This is probably, according to some, a dangerous procedure and The High Road nor myself should be held responsible. The empty cases were then taken from the cylinder with an inkpen. They shot surprisingly good. This would be for emergency use only.
