To be armed and do absolutely nothing while innocent people are being slaughtered is cowardly. Whether they had an official duty to respond or not is irrelevant, they had a moral obligation to stand up for those who were less capable. When terrorists see that even the armed police will not do anything to oppose them, they have won. They now know how truly "soft" their targets were/are.

As a US citizen I am willing to put my life in danger to help out others, just as I did when I was in the military. If/when the situation arises, I will do what it takes to protect those who are not capable. People need examples and I hope that if my children and their mother were out about and something happened, that there would be someone around to watch after them. Maybe it's just me, but I feel that obligation towards others. I could never live with myself if I were armed and did nothing while innocent people get slaughtered around me.

It's only second-guessing if you have never had your beliefs tested.
