Hey guys, can you tell me about your Mustangs? I have an opportunity to buy one next weekend at the show and would like to know your thoughts. I've been buying all the Colts I can get my hands on, but dont have a Mustang yet. Do you like it as a carry gun. Have you found them to be reliable. Do you like the Pocketlite version? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Kevin.

I once owned a blue all-steel mustang. It was great for ankle carry.

I since replaced it with a Kahr PM9. The Kahr's not as thin or streamlined, but it's a 9.

A couple years later, I picked up a blue govt .380. It's like the Mustang, but just a little longer grip and bbl. It also has an actual barrel bushing.

Neat guns, though. Worth collecting if you have the dough.

i have the Colt Mk IV Series 80. We put an ambi safety on it because i'm a lefty. i just love that gun. It is my backup primary carry gun.

Kevin, I'm like you, in that I've never owned one. I have shot them though. Great little guns. The one I shot was accurate and smooth. A Mustang is already on my wish list. Just waiting for the right one to come along.

I love mine.

That said, on my pistol and from what I've read and learned many other Mustangs:

The slide stop can fall out upon firing.

The safety can accidentally be engaged during firing.

The slide won't always lock back on an empty magazine.

Apparently, solutions exist to these problems and Cylinder and Slide knows how to spiff them up into reliable carry weapons, but C&S will want around 300 bucks or so to do it.

I've also seen photos of people bashing the slide to pieces (or cracks forming) by firing too many +P loads out of them.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies!! He is going to call me back in a few hours with a hard number. I've done business with him before, so all is good. As long as the price is around 600.00 or less. BTW.....Its blued, pocketlite, and NIB with papers.

Albatross..... have you actually seen these problems on your Mustang?

The seems like a good price for NIB................go for it. I've seen many used ones go for that amount.

I've got a stainless Mustang PocketLite collecting dust in the safe. It should probably hit the road and make room for something I find more useful.

I have the Double action only Pony Pocketlite in 380 of course.

It is the first "Pocket" pistol I have cared for. I have tried a lot of them too.

I have mostly stuck with J frames. But this one works. Safe for true pocket carry too.

The left grip panel has cracked. Anyone happen to have one. I would love to buy it from you.

PM me please.

Great little guns.

Fred

I had one of the originals and wish I hadn't had to sell it. I'm not big on 380 but I wish I still had it in my collection.

I have both the Mustang Plus II stainless and the Government .380 stainless. For what it's worth I feel the Mustang length taxes the recoil spring too much, I've replaced mine twice in a very short time. I ordered the Wolf extra strength spring but haven't shot with it yet. The Government model I feel is better able to take the hammering on the spring. BTW, that Mustang, I changed to a stainless guide rod because I hate plastic, it may have caused the problem but I don't know yet. The mag springs got weak and the slide wouldn't lock back, I replaced the mag springs and it works again.

I also own both a Mustang and a Govt. 380 auto. My Mustang is a nickel-plated, pearl-stocked beauty. It is a fantastic little pistol and I would certainly recommend it. Colt craftsmanship at its finest.

That being said, I would never have bought it at today's price. No way am I shelling out "Python prices" for a .380 pocket pistol.

My wife's stainless Mustang has been problem free after many hundreds if not thousands of rounds fired through it. I would be interested in the ambi safety if someone could clue me in on where it is available. I also have seen used ones going for $600 or more.

I have a 1990 Blue Mustang and it a find little pistol. I used to carry but replaced with a Kel Tec. Mustangs are worth to much and some parts are almost impossible to fine. Break a extractor and you will be looking for a while.
I found mag release spring to weak and a stronger wolff really didn't help much.(I did find a cure )
Make sure to read manual about how to turn the ejector back around You will do this at least once. And never push safety all the way down or up with slide and grips removed. Their are little things behind safety and a spring. They fly a long way and are very hard to find.:what: I won't say how I learned about them.:D

I have a blue Mustang and its a great pocket pistol. I've pocket carried it for years. I have had the slide fail to lock back on an empty mag. Other than that, no problems.

I have a Mustang Plus II and she is a great little pistol. I have run a number of different ammunition profiles and so far she has not failed me. Accuracy was great for the little pistol. I carry mine in my back pocket with no problems.

Thanks for all the information guys. Its making my decision easier. The spare parts thing is the biggest drawback, but I deal with it daily with all my other discontinued Colts. So I may go for it.

So if I pick up a few spare parts then there really isnt any reason NOT to buy it then. Thanks for the info. Kevin.

The spare parts you will want are the real problem. Plenty of parts that no ones needs. The extractors are the spare part that is hard (impossible?) to find. So don't break the one in your gun.

When you clean the gun, make sure you don't push the extractor down and when you do accidentally knock it down, don't break/twist/bend it putting it back into position. This thread, outlines it pretty well http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=297271

The only problem my gun has specifically, is the safety engaging on recoil. Which, apparently is common and the solution is to "ride the safety" with your thumb.

The other problems I've read about/heard of. I was able to recreate the slide stop falling out on my Mustang, but it has never done so with regular shooting.

(I had to shake the gun, while firing it side ways gangster style)

Despite these shortcomings, it suits my needs as a carry weapon. Just need to be aware of its limitations.

Thanks so much for the 'heads-up'. I appreciate it! I have been told too that the quality of the parts, and the fit and finish are not up to the usual Colt standards. Do you find this true on your particular specimen? Kevin.

From what I've seen I'd say the fit and finish are compared to other Colts. People sometimes crank on the Mustang because of the plastic trigger and guide rod (after market steel parts are available, but not really needed). I think most of them, mine included, have plastic grips.

If the price is right, the Mustang is a great carry gun. I love mine (bought for 375) and usually use it as my carry weapon these days. I'd go so far as to say that the Mustang is work 600 bucks if it fits your needs/wants. If nothing else, they are real popular and easy for resale. One is for sale right now right here on THR for 900 bucks.

/I used to daily carry a full sized steel 1911 but decided that based upon my 'area of operation' such a gun was overkill.
