I bought one when they first came out; I already had the Government .380, but really wanted something smaller. So I sold off my AMT Backup .380, put some more cash together, and bought one at a gun show. Just a fantastic little carry gun; 100% reliable and an absolute pleasure to shoot. If you do your part, you won't have any problem putting them all in the black at 30 feet.
The only problem, as you may have noted, is that the price for Colts like this, have really escalated into the stratosphere. So much so, that prices being what they are, it could make it more of a collectible than an every day carry piece.

The Mustang, Mustang PlusII and Government model are all based on the Star .380, in fact, the Star is closer to a 1911 than any of them. The Star has the barrel link, the lockwork is practically identical. Colt had an arrangement with Iver Johnson, who was making the Star DK (IIRC) under license, the Colt was to be called the Pony, not the later Pony DAO but one identical to the Star. The later Colts borrow the salient features of the Star except for the external extractor on the Star. It was a fascinating study. One of the 11 remaining Colt Ponies sold recently for over $3000! Steel framed, beautiful gun.

My EDC is an all stainless Mustang. Rides great in a pocket holster. Goes bang every time. The accuracy is fine, though a better trigger and sights would no doubt help it out some. I always thought that it would be a great platform for Big Dot Express sights, just never wanted to throw that kind of cash into it. The only problem I have experienced was my own doing. If you pocket carry it, C&L'd, make sure to keep the firing pin channel clear of pocket lint. It will prevent the pistol from firing!
I'm really surprised, what with the ongoing 1911 love fest, that Colt or another manufacturer has not resurrected this design. While there are many micro 1911's out there, none of them are truely pocketable like the Mustang.

I agree; can't figure out why Colt or another manufacturer isn't making at least the DAO Pony design, as I would snap one of those up over some of the other DA/DAO .380 pistols out there now.

The real money tree would be a shrunk down 1911 like Llama made, but without the stupid ventilated rib on top and of course with higher quality and fitting. I love my little Llama 1911 .380, ok, it's not a 1911 if it isn't full sized. It sure is slim and good looking. Made in 17-4 or 416 it would be a big seller.
