At the range with my new a-2,and dad with his Garand yesterday,we drew a table next to a guy with a new bushmaster.
Not sure which model,it had the fake tele-stock,14.5 barrel and muzzel brake.
It was LOUD!
Dad could not belive it was the same round as mine.Made his Garand seem tame.
The fellow was nice enough, and we ended up all shooting each others toys. His bushy"felt" a lot more recoil than my RRA with 20 in. barrel.
Is it the brake,or barrel length,or a combanation, that made such a differance? Why would you want a set-up like that,it was a lot harder to shoot!even with muffs on,it rocked me.
It did look neat, with flash lights, lasers, forward pistol grip, and red dot.............i kinda liked it
Dads taking bets on when i get mine......

Matt,
I think it's a little of both. Short barell and the brake.
I have a 14" contender pistol in .223 and that it LOTS louder than my 20" Bushmaster. It puts out a fire ball about a foot wide. It definatly gets peoples attention on the pistol line!:what:

My bushmaster does not have a brake but my "03 springfield in 30-06 and Marlin guidegun in 45-70 does and for the shooter it's not as bad as the people sitting next to you.

I had a compensator put on my Bushmaster shorty. It was supposed to be pinned on but the smith silver soldered it:cuss:

It is incredibly loud and the shooters on either side of you at a range feel the pressure wave.

I had to get a set of ear muffs that you can still hear through but that cut out noise above a certain level in order to be able to use it in the field for coyotes.

But, there is no muzzle rise at all. So a second shot or a moving shot is a piece of cake. Probably overkill and I would not do it again. But I am stuck with it so to speak.

Sounds like either the Bushmaster Ak Shorty or Mini Y Comp. Both are pretty loud, but the Bushy AK brake will definitely be more noticeable to everyone on the line. The shooter doesn't get it too bad, but with the AK brake under a covered range I could feel some of the pressure wave.

I bought one of those Smith Enterprises muzzle brakes for my Garand. I let my friend shoot while I spotted from the point next to him. BAD IDEA. The pressure wave and blast was incredible. It blew down boxes and blew cases off the table! But, then again, I was wearing eye protection and ear protection. A loud gun only makes the outing more enjoyable. Makes it sound like you have more gun, fell like you have less gun.

A friend (Who's the one who introduced me to my future wife) owns a Sweedish Mauser cut down to 16 1/4" This is a beast.

Man, some guy had the same kinda setup at the range. AR shorty with some kinda brake. Nearly blew my cap off with every shot. :fire: I should have moved, but I decided to test my focus.

I'm buying an M44 and installing a brake on it. Just in case I see this guy again.

A buddy of mine has the Bushmaster postban M4 with the mini Y-comp. VERY annoying to shoot next to. Extremely loud. He's thinking about having it removed and a fake flash hider installed just because everyone hates shooting with him. :D

They are extremely loud to shooters adjacent. I researched this before I bought my 16" Shorty Bushmaster with no comp. I went with the Bushy because the 16" Armalite version had a permanent comp on it. Many TFL folks warned me of the noise a comp can cause, especially irritating at a range. I guess they work regarding recoil, but I don't think the extra noise is worth it. I don't shoot competion, the .223 has little kick anyway, so I don't need the grief.

My 16" M4gery with the 2" comp is LOUD. I get lots of comments from the sides when I shoot it.

Can't wait to create some serious decibels!

As soon as my 10" NFA Krinkov shorty is completed. It'll be interesting to see how much of a velocity loss from the 7.62x39 there is with that short a barrel. Hopefully, my Chrony is up to the task! :D

CETME with the Century muzzle brake is pretty loud, too. Not so bad for the shooter, but significant pressure wave to those at the side. I found out when I let family members shoot mine for the first time.

CETME recoil is amazingly light for a .308. though. That brake must do a good job of turning recoil into noise.

To add another anectode, I was at a table next to a guy with a similar setup (Bushmaster shorty, with AK brake). When he fired, it felt like someone was blasting me in the side of the head with an air hose. Twice, I turned my head to look for the idiot with the air hose before I realized it was the AR with AK brake doing it.

Kinda funny in retrospect.
