Some good riflesmiths help me out here. I have heard a lot of comment on a good barrel crown helping accuracy. Apparently this is due to the even flow of gas aroung the bullet as it exits the barrel?
The question- Many AK 7.62 rifles have a "slant" brake on the muzzle, apparently to deflect gas against it and hold the muzzle down to help control muzzle rise under full auto fire. It would seem like this contradicts the even crown theory. Could this be a reason AK rifles have a bad reputation for accuracy?

I meant specificly the AK slanted brake, the asymetrical one found on the 7.62 rifles.

It probably won't have much of an effect on accuracy, unless the brake is spinning around or something crazy. Muzzle gas would tend to deflect the bullet slightly, but it would do so in a particular direction every time. Consistency is more important than exactly what direction the bullet goes.

Right, very few brakes are perfectly symmetrical. Even the A2 style flash suppressor would act similar to the AK cut away style.

I think AK's are less accurate due to being loose and the variety of ammo isn't exactly match quality.

The difference is that, at the crown, gases are in close proximity to the bullet...Muzzle brakes are larger than bullet diameter, and usually deflect gase away from the bullet, however there might be some "bounce back" from the brake (especially in the case of the AKs you talk about) BUT I suspect by the time thegas come back, the bullet has already passed way beyond the area.

I experimented with barrel porting, on a Mauser that I sporterized, and that does seem to help accuracy, as most of the gases are already gone by the time the bullet leaves the muzzle, thus they can't have much effect on the bullet..

muzzle brakes

In some rifles it could help accuracy. IT has nothing to do with the gases but has everything to do with the barrel harmonics. I am a huge believer of suppresors which will change the harmonics and lesson the vibration of the barrel when fired. That is what the BOSS does

The muzzle crown/ symmetry of the brake is only half of the accuracy equation. You also need to consider the quality of the ammunition. AK ammo is notorious for lack of quality. Big weight differences between bullets, no uniformity in the shape of the bullet base and variation in powder charge all contribute to inaccuracy.

muzzle breaks

Yes DnPRK, we all are aware of other accuracy factors. The thread was accuracy in relation to MUZZLE BREAKS.

Worried about the muzzle brake on an AK! The most precisely machined muzzle brake ever fitted to an AK will not improve accuracy if it is fed run-of-the-mill AK ammo.
