I have a Savage Hog Hunter in .308 . They come with a barrel that is threaded so I am considering putting a muzzle brake on it. So far most of the information I have found and the brakes themselves seem to be geared for the AR platform. What would be a good brake for a Savage bolt action ? I don't want to have to do any machining and would like something around $100.00 0r less. This isn't an expensive rifle and I already have a scope for it . Also anyone know if adding a muzzle brake changes chamber pressure ? I will reload for this rifle . The project is mainly because I can but I would like to do a good job so any tips would be appreciated.

The brake does not change chamber pressure in any way.

I would suggest looking at https://www.americanprecisionarms.com they make some of the better more efficient brakes on the market and they are focused on the precision rifle market. They are probably more money than you wanted to spend but some of the models are on sale close to you price.

Anything threaded 5/8" x 24 TPI. Whatever suits your fancy. You can find them from cheap to $$$$$$$. Here's cheap - https://www.ebay.com/itm/152120340497 Here's cheaper - https://www.ebay.com/itm/308-7-62-C...175383?hash=item3d6c4fd197:g:AgUAAOSwDn5bRr5f And not so cheap - https://www.ebay.com/itm/APA-Gen-II...193903?hash=item1c67a8b4ef:g:KfAAAOSwHUhaKtAo This one from JP Enterprises (designed by Bennie Cooley) is highly recommended by a few knowledgeable folks and it's right in your price range - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003363390/

Self timing brakes will be your best option. Area 419 Hellfire, APA Lil' B@stard or Fat B@stard, Impact Precision, Piercision Muscle Brake, or Seekins ATC are brakes which get my money.

Traditional, machine timed or shimmed brakes are fine, but self timing brakes are a cleaner, less expensive, less burdensome option. The Holland QD brake is a great product, and I have used many of the PRI Quiet Control copies as low cost options over the years.

If you have the gun scoped or shoot at night I would avoid any which vents on the top. I shoot hogs at night, the first time I fired at night without one It took 2-3 min for the smoke to clear to be able to shoot again. I have Seekins on mine and they vent all to the sides, work really good. It does make the gun louder for you though.

Darrel Holland is a great machinist! Some folks have machines that are on "display", Darrel uses his machines EVERY day to make some fantastic product.
