I bought a muzzel brake for my 338 build. It was from a company in Virginia and the bore needs opened up. If I calculate .030 it comes out to right around 3/8. The two questions I have is 1. Is it ok to mount on a drill press and use a 3/8 bit to open up the bore or is it a must that its reamed. And 2 do you have to open the port holes to that same size as well? The lathe is down so that's out

No drill press or drill bit will bore an accurate hole. Reaming is the only way to do it short of boring it in a lathe. The ports are purely up to you. There are as many port hole sizes, numbers, configurations as there are days in a month.

"...bought a muzzle brake..." How long ago? If was recently, you should be able to send it back and gret the right one.
"...No drill press or drill bit will bore an accurate hole..." Exactly. Drilling isn't anywhere near a precision machinging technique. It's a starter thing.
"...calculate .030..." 37 thou and it's too much. 20 thou over bullet diameter is considered standard.
