muzzle brake/threaded barrel question

This is my first post so i'll try and make it good.

I've got a Mossberg 4x4 .338 win mag rifle that i'd like to put a muzzle brake on. Heres my little issue/problem or idea or whatever.

The "NEW" special purpose Mossberg ATR in only .308,Barrett M82, Armalite AR-30 and AR-50 have the typical huge muzzle brake that works great and looks cool. Armalite sells the brake for their .338 lapua mag and its a 5/8-18 thread for the barrel. I don't see why this wouldn't work for my .338 win mag Mossberg?

I did call Mossberg directly and they said they would NOT insall this brake on any other rifle or custom job. I understand that but too bad such a big brake is on a .308 and not a larger magnum caliber that might be preffered.

I don't know who to ask or call to see if this can be done. Its like bringing in your own steak and eggs to a resturant and asking them to cook it! Any recommendations or ideas to get this muzzle break installed and or who to ask?

If you have a full .625" or more at the muzzle to cut threads in, it should work just fine.

You are aware that a muzzle brake on a 24" barrel .338 Mag will be so loud the fillings will fall out of your teeth when you shoot it?

Also, your friends will have something else to do when you call them and ask them to go shooting with you.

While a clamshell brake will certainly work it's about as elegant as a Russian beet farmer's daughter when screwed onto a sporter rifle barrel. If your worried about efficiency I can assure you that a radially ported brake will tame that gun down. I have several "boomer" class rifles with Vaise brakes and my own version and all are very effective at mitigating recoil.

I'd encourage you to think about the more mainstream brakes out there in gun land. Radial ports or maybe one that's vented to the sides if your worried about a dust signature.

(not sure why that'd be an issue on a sporter gun but whatever)

There are many brakes on the market to choose from..... KDF, Vaise, Hollands, Badger, Tubb, Gentry just to name a few. If you are wanting a big, gawdy but yet a very effective brake as the Armalite try a JP Enterprise Eliminator.

Being that your rifle is a sporter( ie small dia),your muzzle diameter is going to be the factor. Depending on the diameter some brands will or wont work, common sizes are 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and 3/4 inch with 18,24,28 TPI.
