muzzle crown....

I've been well pleased with the Del-Ton mid-length kit rifle I built this past spring.

And though I configured it with an A2 upper, I've brought home some pretty respectable groups.

One thing that's bothered me though, is seeing that the muzzle (down under the compensator) appears to have NO crown?

I know the Del-Ton is a "budget build", but popping off the compensator and machining a proper crown seems like it would be easy enough to do.

I got to thinking about this after reading a thread recently, where the OP noted that even a very slight scratch or ding at the muzzle had a dramatic effect on his rifles performance.

not sure what you mean by crown. a recessed crown is not required for accuracy. all it does is help protect the muzzle from the aforementioned ding. if that critical area where the barrel last contacts the bullet is protected by a compensator, i don't really see how it could get dinged in a way that a recessed or "target crown" would prevent.


edit: well, unless the compensator itself is dinging it

EVERY barrel has a "crown" at the muzzle.... but crowns can be shaped differently.

Most crowns are recessed in some form or fashion... from a cone angle to a "donut" shape to a recessed flat face.

Supposedly the most accurate possible crown is a true 90 degree flat face.... but this can still be recessed into the face of the muzzel to give some protection to the crown.
