Does anyone know the ballpark velocity of a sabboted 240 gr.Hornady XTP (.44) in front of 100 grains of Triple 7 or Pyrodex RS out of a CVA Optima (50 cal)? Trying to use a ballistic calculator to plot a rough trajectory out to 200 yds. -Thanks
Tricky question. From what I can see probably 1550 to 1650 fps. Powder lot, age of powder, primer, tightness of your particular bore and other variables come into play. The only way to find out for sure is to shoot it over a chronograph. Every time you change any of the components you will have to do it again. As far as 200 yards I doubt you will get good accuracy. The bullet will likely be subsonic by the time it gets there and be very unstable. Pistol bullets have a terrible ballistic coefficient and shed velocity like crazy.
Trajectory is pretty steep also. My Strike , 2 inches high at 100 yards, is about 3 inches low at 150. This is based on actual shooting. Before you go launching slugs at game verify your POI at various ranges.
Yah, I don't plan on shooting to 200 yds. just curious on the drop. 125 yds would be my set maximum range to take a shot. I plan to shoot groups at 50, 100, and 150 to get real world results , but sighting in with a chart as a guide to get close. on paper.
I've seen velocity for this load anywhere from 1500-1780 fps. , seems like a big spread regardless of variables.
