Muzzleloader hunting in Colorado(New Thread)

A work buddy and I both drew Colorado cow elk only muzzleloader permits this year (2014). I have read a lot about PowerBelt bullets, weight of bullets, etc. I have a TC Impact 50 cal. I have worked up to 120gr. of Triple 7 powder, that I am going to use with the .270gr. Platinum. I have also read elsewhere that the .270gr will not be enough bullet weight for elk. I am going to be limiting my shots to 100 yards and less. In Colorado, scopes are not allowed on muzzleloaders, so I have installed the PeepRib Peep Sight. Along with a fiber optic front sight. According to the PowerBelt ballistic chart, should be in the 1505+ velocity range at 100 yards with a KE of 1358+ ft. lb. Maybe a little on the light side on elk for some. But this is the load that I have chosen. Leaving on Sept 9th. Season opens Sept. 13th. Stay tuned.

I've heard quite a bit about inconsistent performance with Powerbelts. For elk you ought to try a 260 or 300 gr. Scorpion PT Gold. Excellent accuracy AND performance.

Scorpion PT Gold

I have heard a lot about the PowerBelt, also. With the peep sight I am getting 1.5" groups at 50 yards. Cleaning after every shot. Not great for some, but acceptable for me. Possibly because I am using a peep sight, with 61 year old eyes. And will be limiting my shot distance, due to I owe that to the animal that I am hunting. With my Bushnell 3x9 scope, I get greater groups with Hornady sabots. Sabots are not allowed in Colorado. If the trip was not so close, I would try the Scorpion PT Gold. Hopefully I will obtain good expansion results with the .270 Platinum.
