I was at my local gun shop when one of the salesmen brought an AK-74 out. He said the price was $459 plus tax. I said.."I will take it" ... icon_smile_big.gif .... It looks like a SGL from Arsenal but may be a converted Saiga. What do you think ???

I'm a gonna say a convert. At that price these days it's winner either way. Did that mag come with it cause those suckers ain't cheap either.

Well since it says "Arsenal Las Vegas NV USA" on the side of it, i'd say its an SGL. Nice find!

Figure the rifle normally costs $900 give or take 50-100. Two bakelite mags would be about $100, estimated. That bakelite grip, if it is a Russian one, would be about $40. The Bulgarian stockset is about $25.

One thing-did you check the barrel? Make sure its not all corroded from 7N6 surplus.

That's an SGL 31 all the way. I don't know what the furniture and brake are but the rest of it is Arsenal. At that price you pretty much stole the gun.

SGLs are converted Saigas.

Lightly used huh? Definitely used, but gtg at that price. Definitely strip her down and look for corrosion. Take that muzzle break off and check the muzzle, you may have to break out some fine steel wool and clean it up.

Bakelite mags go for $40+, what are the markings on them?

You could probably call/email Arsenal and see when they convert that thing. They may have stuff like that on record.

Now shoot the hell out of it. Have fun.

It looks like a good rifle at a great price. I dont want to be that guy but I dont see that many 'merican parts on that beast.

Check the bore and gas tube for rust as 7n6 may have gone through it. Are you able to remove the brake because they will rust on also?

If that rifle really is an Arsenal, and not a parts gun built on an Arsenal marked receiver, that's a pretty good deal.

I'd personally strip down and refinish the wood furniture, as it appears to be in nice condition and has a decent looking grain. I'd then look into getting the metal refinished in a more durable coating like gun kote or cerakote. That would leave you with a product on par with a new Arsenal for much less money.

I'd keep it how it is... I don't know about you guys, but I think the beat-up look suits the AK.

Not illegal to own a non-922(r) compliant gun, just illegal to assemble one. That said, there's not any opinion on whether or not changing magazines is "assembling".... :banghead:

The fact that foreign magazine parts are classified as foreign parts seems pretty clear to me that it is assembling in respect to 922r.

I like the beat up look too, why invest money into this steal. And it is 922r compliant, done.

Shoot the hell out of it already, ha.

One last test in terms of barrel life/bore condition, do a bullet drop test. If you are not familiar with the bullet drop test, remove the muzzle break, insert a 5.45 round, bullet first, into the end of the muzzle and see how deep it goes. If the bullet goes all the way to the neck of the case, that's a very worn out bore, if some of the bullet is still showing, still have plenty of life.

Also keyholing could indicate poor bore condition.
