A while back, I acquired a used CVA mountain rifle in .54 Cal. Unfortunately, the bore was beyond repair (thought I could lapp it back to life). Well, I decided to have it rebored (freshened) to 58 Caliber as it was of sufficient diameter to do so.

Well, I finally got the opportunity to take it for a quick shoot. I am very pleased with it. I only tried one load - 70 grains Grafs ffg. It really liked a spit wad using cleaning patches that measure .018". Shot only Hornady .570" round balls.

All shooting was done off-hand at 25 yards - went to the closest range to me (I belong to two) and it's only 25yards until the owner expands out to 300.

Here's a few pics - the rifle and a target.

That's the second and third 3-shot groups. The very first shot was a little high and to the right and the 2nd and 3rd shots are next to each other and lower - white dots. The three just above the bull were from a previous shoot - recycling the target :) After the initial fouling shot, all of the rounds stuck together. You can see that I was adjusting the sights up as I shot each time. Ended by moving the rear sight to the left to adjust that too.

I'm very happy with the way this is shooting with the first load tried!

Good way to salvage a bad barrel. It shoots good now. Who did the work for you?
