My Bulgarian Makarov Has A Safety Issue - Plan of Action?

My Bulgarian Makarov appears to have a safety issue. When the safety/decocker is engaged, it appears that the gun will still cycle and likely will fire in DA. This gun is a recent acquisition and like any good C&R collector, I check out my old guns for issues or potential problems before shooting them for the first time. I'm definitely not a gunsmith but I have replaced firing pins, ejectors, extractors and just replaced the rollers in my CZ52, I built my AK from a parts kit, have assembled a lot of ARs, nothing too difficult but probably a little more skilled than just field stripping for cleaning.

Is this a problem/repair that you think with my meager skills, I could track down and figure out? Or should I just throw in the towel and take it to a professional? Have you heard of this occurring in Makarovs in particular? What is the most likely culprit for a non working safety mechanism? It works in the sense of it decocks the charged pistol but something is broken if it lets me fire the gun when the safety is engaged, obviously.

Like I know that CZ52s have brittle firing pins, crappy extractors and rollers because in 1953 Soviet-era Czechoslovakia, their metal finishing and hardening procedures were a bit, shall we say, "underdeveloped". So I ordered the Harrington Products replacements and installed them. I don't know a lot about the idiosyncrasies of Makarovs, but lots of ComBloc C&R pistols and older of all types seem to have their operational quirks and issues. It's a nice pistol that I want to safely shoot so I need to figure out a game plan. Any advice, links to Makarov sources, websites, books?

Forgive an ignoramus's question, but weren't Makarovs made without a safety? And a safety had to be kludged on to allow importation? If so that mod would certainly have been done in haste, and your pistol was already broken when shipped.

You may be thinking of tokarev pistols.

Exactly! I recently removed the "ATF mandated added-on" safety on my Tokarev, which leaves a good sized hole in both sides of the frame. Luckily, Marschal Grips in Hungary make some nice Walnut grips that cover those
ugly holes on either side!

But back to to the Makarov in question...

IIRC yours is working as designed. the safety still blocks the firing pin so it shouldn't fire. I'll double check mine when I get home.

Wouldn't a simple pencil test let you know if it will fire in double action?

Rack the slide, insert a number 2 pencil into the barrel point the firearm upwards and try to pull the trigger. If the pencil moves it probably would fire. If it doesn't, it probably wouldn't. Note the 'Probably'. I'm just a tinkerer not a gunsmith.

Ok. Mine is a commercial Russian gun and when the safety is in the safe position it does not allow the trigger or hammer full travel, you can pull the trigger part way and the hammer will move but both are stopped about 1/2 travel.

According to materials I found from the Baikal owners manual over on Makarov.com, at least on the commercial Baikal model, "The hammer cannot be moved when the safety is engaged." Assuming the commercial Maks were made in the same design as the military Maks, this would seem to confirm somethings amiss with mine. It also says, "Should the detent spring fall out, the pistol will most likely go to the "fire" position. The safety should be replaced if the spring has fallen out."

These seem like good clues. Numrich has the safety and detent spring available, think I am going to order them. I'm told they are fairly easy to replace as far as disassembly and doing it.

I too have a Bulgie Mak. When the safety is on, the trigger and hammer will barely budge. You're right in concluding that your Mak is not operating as intended.

Thank you for verifying that with another Bulgarian! I have two CZ52s so when I had one torn apart, it was nice to have another copy to refer to as far as, "how far is that firing pin recessed?" etc. as I was changing it out. Maybe I should
buy another Makarov so I have a reference copy? ;-)

They always seem to be a good investment.

Update on my Bulgarian Makarov safety issue.

The new safety and a spare safety detent spring I ordered from Numrich arrived today. Upon removing the existing safety and comparing it to the new safety,
I think the issue becomes crystal clear, broken claw actuator on the safety, there was nothing to keep the action from cycling other than this little metal claw.
New safety went in smoothly and gun and safety now function safely and perfectly as God and Nikolay Makarov intended.
