Last day of the deer hunt here was yesterday. It was awesome. I headed out with my Brother in Law and my wife's cousin.

We went a now "secret spot" . We saw deer everywhere. First hour my wife's cousin downed a nice two point. The day before he and his brother had shot a huge 4x5 in the same spot. He went to drag his deer back to the truck so I had his rifle. A few minutes later a shot rang out in the next canyon over where my Brother in law was. He radioed over to me that he just shot at a huge deer at 200 yards and that he didn't think he hit it very well.

I started to hike over there and on my way a saw a big buck limping. It was about 250 yards away. I took a shot at it as it was disappearing behind some scrub oak. I had to guess where I thought it's vitals were. It fell where I shot it. I radioed over to my Brother In Law and told him that I had finished off his deer. When we got over to it, it was a huge 5x5 if you count the 2 inch eye guards. Only problem was that I hit it right in the head. The antlers were flopping around like it's ears. Not sure of the spread on it because the antlers wouldn't stand up any more :( .

Anyway, we decided to drag it out down a canyon. We figured we could get to a road that way easier. We drug it almost two miles in a blizzard. When we got to the bottom of the canyon, there were no roads in sight. We decided we had to leave the deer in order to get our frozen butts out of there alive. We were sooooo cold. We hiked another 5 miles around the mountian till we could get to a spot where my wife's cousin could pick us up in the truck. On our way we saw 2 four points, 3, 3 points and several other bucks that we weren't sure how big they were. I didn't think we were going to make it. It was a rough hike through steep canyons and thick brush. At one point I layed down in the snow and said "this is it, I am done". A while later I got up and we pressed on.

Today, my Brother In Law and my wife's cousin borrowed some horses and went back and got the deer. They are are their way here now and we'll skin it out.

Lessons learned: Radios are very important for safety reasons. We were able to keep in touch with my wife's cousin the whole time, he knew where we were at and was ready to go for help if we decided we weren't going to make it out. Also drag your deer out the way you came. I might be hard, but you might end up screwed like we did.

It was the hardest day of my life. At the same time one of the funnest.

Awsome! Glad you got out of there OK. Deer season for me starts this Friday. I have 9 days to get my very first deer. Here's hopein'!

That cut above your eye... that's called "scope-eye". ;)

Glad everyone made it out ok and with a successful hunt to boot.

Here is a picture of that buck. Looks a little bad because we had let it "age" a few days before we got around to taking pictures.
