So I don't want to start the equivalent of a race riot here. I like the piston jobs, though willing to go DI. Currently looking to spend a max of 1,000-1,300. I would prefer to have that on the lower end. I have looked at a Stag Arms Model 8 - on Buds for 9 and change. I have found a Sig 516 local new for 1146, and a guy asking 1,100 for a used though the max I would pay for it would be 900ish and that comes with flip up's and a front grip. I have done some research here and around the interwebz and have decided that these guns are both good and reliable. I did shoot a friends Bushmaster MOE setup, the recoil seemed a bit sharp, maybe I just need to get use to it.

Can anyone confirm the rumor of no spare parts for the Sig 516 (only way is to buy full upper). Can you get spare parts for a Stag? Out of the two any recommendations/ pros/cons? I did do a search for Sig 516 not much came back that was new info. I am open to a DI or other brands just seems like it is very hard to find places that have other brands (e.x. Spikes and Daniel Defense) in stock.

Keep in mind this is going to be my SHTF/end of the world go to gun, along with general fun while we wait for that to happen.

Thanks in advance :)

I dont care pistons. They are front heavy and really don't offer a huge advantage over DI. It was cool fad for ARs, but soon after everyone i know with them went back to DI.

I don't have anything against Sig, but something about Sig ARs just worry me. If it is a true milspec AR it should be fine.

Stag is a fine mid range AR. I like the 3 gun version they have. Any AR parts will work for a Stag. Plenty out there.

For that budget i would look at Daniel Defense, Colt, Bravo Co. and you might find a Noveske on the high end of your budget. Personally i would try to get a Noveske. If that was out of my budget i would look at the Daniel Defense V5 or V7.

Other good ARs are Smith and Wesson, Palmetto State Armory, Stag, Rock River Arms, Bushmaster, CMMG. I am missing some. I would stick with ARs with more milspec. Look here for more info:

Whats pushing me away from the pistons is the lack of parts. Have to have this part made by this company. Can't seem to find a DD for less than 1,400ish. Stag seems to be up there. For some reason the spreadsheets wont open :(

Post #2 covered it well. For your budget you can afford a nice milspec AR from a top company or you can build one just how you want it from high quality parts. Thing is, you won't know what you "need" for sure until after you've had it awhile so I would get one of the basic ARs from a proven company then save some money for accessories to get as you and your gun get acquainted. That way you don't pay extra for features you don't need or wouldn't like. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone. Found a website that sells a Palmetto State Armory M4 Spec Op AR-15 Rifle for 799 it's all MOEed out. Any word on this company?

You should easily be able to find a Colt 6920 in your price range, which is what I would do.

There was another thread here at THR saying that certain Walmarts had started to carry the AR-15 and they were selling them for $599. It just depends on where you live and what you want. Inspite of some panic buying there seems to be a glut of ARs in some parts of the country; or so I have been told...not around here guys are wanting mine?

I do not own one but most of the guys think they are a good company with great products. Do a search and their name seems to always be in the hunt.

you can get a dd with the rails for about 1200 if you look around. without rails ddm4xv is about 950. ar's are a little hard to get right now so search around. most local gunshops have marked their inventory up because they know spur of the moment buyers will pay the price. don't be afraid to buy used and save some money.

I haven't heard many pad things about PSA at all....DPMS on the other hand....

Decent price? Is there a huge difference between DD/Palmetto/DPMS?

I would skip the DPMS and go with a PSA if you want to stay in that price range. If you want to go up a little, you have Rock River, DD, and Colt as some "high-end" options around the $1k mark.
