If you read my previous post about "your ideal .44 woods gun," you know that I think the .44 is a great compromise of knockdown power, compactness and convenience. I had a nice 629 that I traded a while back and ever since then I've said I want to build up my ideal .44 mag. Here is what I'm planning for 2006.

Start with a Smith and Wesson 29 or 629 revolver 4" to 6" barrel but preferably a 5".

Add Ashley Big Dot front night sight with rear tritium post (great sight for quick acquisition under stress and accurate with practice.)

Refinish in matte black if blued, leave stainless if stainless.

Trigger job for better DA and SA.

Round Trigger for more comfort.

I have other ideas but these are my basic requirements for my woods gun. I'm not looking for a high end big dollar revolver and with these mods, I'm looking at something custom for me, practical and relatively inexpensive if I pick up the revolver used.

Here are some other thoughts about what I'll pick up for this woods gun:

Super Hard Cast Hammerhead ammo for 4 legged critters encountered in the woods.

HKS speedloaders

Cordura Nylon holster and speedloader pouch.

Cartridge slide if I choose not to carry speedloaders.

Has anyone here built up a .44 to their likings? If so, what have you done? Not done? Why?

Here's a snap shot of my customized pre-agreement model 629 with three-inch barrel. I sent it to the good folks at http://www.magnaport.com for bead blasting, hammer and trigger jewelling, quadruple porting, and barrel crowning. I sent the un-blasted cylinder to Michael Gouse (http://www.mtart.com/index.htm) for engraving with a standing wolf after chamfering the chambers. I lightened the single action pull to slightly above two pounds. The stocks are from Nill (http://mactec-militaryarms.com/nill-grips.html).

I carry concealed about a third of the time, indifferently concealed about a third of the time, and openly about a third of the time. This is a dandy carry gun.
