I finally got my first Ruger rifle out of lay-away. M77 MKII .30-06. Now if I could just find a place in portland to shoot rifles.

Red eye and you finger is on the trigger.
Nice rifle though.
What's the cal.?
The scope looks sharp, what is it?

Mad C,
It is just a low cost Bushnell. It is a 3-9x32 made for a .22. Cost me about $40 at the gun show. The ones not made for a .22 where too big around in the lense area and would not have left room for the bolt to move.

Some .22 scopes have less eye relief than normal centerfire ones. If this is the case with that one, you might get to know the meaning of the words "scope eye". Be careful!

Oh, one other thing. Your scope is pointing WAY high. Some Rugers have two different height rings for front and back. Yours look to be swapped the wrong way.

Congrats on the purchase, boo for violating Rule 3.

Lone_Gunman- Do you dryfire without looking too?

The finger on the trigger was not the worst part. I had just installed the bolt and was dry firing it and didn't remove my finger even though I should have. The worst part was that in my haste to get it together and snap that pic I put the scope mount on backwards. :)

Yea sometimes, why?

I just think that it is slightly irresponsible to pull the trigger of a gun when you're not even looking at what the muzzle is covering. :banghead:

Daniel, I am not sure that makes sense. If you have ensured the gun is clear, and you are not pointing it at anything you aren't willing to destroy, then it doesnt matter if you are looking or not when you dry fire.

Just looking at where the gun is pointed won't prevent an accident if your gun is not clear.

Penguin, Good on your rifle. I'd recommend getting outside of Portland- out in the sticks- as far as places to shoot goes. Get some place where it's safe and nobody cares whether you shoot or not.

Now, I recommend taking up handloading for the .30-06 if you haven't already. If you check out the Hornady 5th Edition manual, they show 50grs IMR 4064 under a 150gr RN SP bullet running something like 2800fps. The times I've seen this load used in a Ruger M77 MkII, it performed quite well in the departments of accuracy and killing power.

As for other comments, everybody wants to get so caught up in "finger off the trigger" and all, they miss the point altogether.

you put an overpriced ($40) rimfire scope on that nice, multi-hundred dollar, high powered rifle?
