I've been lusting after a #3 Russian for several years but never could pull the trigger on one. I always liked it better than the Schofield. I decided I was finally gonna get a Russian and checked around to find out that they were seasonal and hard to come by. In the meantime, I started thinking about Schofields. Between the Gunblast.com articles, a Gittlein-carved Dodge City holster, doing my own leather work, getting some pattern packs from Will Ghormley and Ben Foster's character in "3:10 to Yuma", I had gotten to be pretty lathered up about it. Dixie Gun Works got an order of them in last week and yesterday I made the 2hr trek. I'd been wanting to go anyway and I needed to stop along the way to get my new hat fitted. After getting a little distracted by the other goodies they have, I started handling the Schofield guns and after a just a wee bit of pondering, brought home a 7" .45Colt. Now I've got to get to work on some leather for it. ;D

This is the holster that has me all hot & bothered!

You done good, CraigC. I like it, and in my favorite caliber too. I am glad that Dixie gun works, one of my favorite places, came through for you. Snoop

Wow that Schofield sure is sweet! You made a fine choice with that one. Can hardly wait to see the holster you're going to make for it.

So you still don't have a #3 Russian. That wasn't nice was it.

You have a beautiful Schofield and holster rig. Be sure to let us know how it shoots. I saw one just like yours for sale used at my LGS and would have loved to have own it, but the $1000.00 price tag for a used one made me re-think my lust.

It was pristine.

I still think about it often, like every time I walk in there, and it wasn't there very long either.

I'm jealous now.

Beautiful piece. You are going to find the Schofield is easier to shoot than a Russian. The large hump on the grip frame forces me to regrip every time I cock the hammer in order to reach the hammer spur with my Russian. Then I have to regrip again to get my hand back below the hump. The Schofield will roll in your hand better with recoil to bring the hammer spur under your thumb. Then you can regrip easily without having to fight with the hump. The Russians insisted on that hump, S&W did away with it or modified it heavily for the later models.

I can see that. I had looked at them side by side before and for some reason I liked the Russian better but it couldn't have been for hammer reach. It's a long reach on the Schofield but I think if I grip it just right, I should be able to run it fairly fast. I'm excited about shooting it and making a nice Dodge City holster for it. :)
