When I went down to FL for vacation my parents gave me a Remington 1100LW that they used for skeet and trap. It came with two barrels one with a skeet choke and the other wuth a full choke. I'm going to take it to the range this weekend. If there's anything you can tell me about this particular shotgun it would be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures, sorry for the suck lighting.

The Remington 1100 is a gas operated repeating shotgun know for modest recoil. A fine gun. They can be found in 12, 16, 20, 28ga and .410. Great gun. Looks early 1980's maybe. What are the codes on the barrels?

What do you mean the codes? I took it to a gun shop and all they could tell me was that the 1100LW was made between 1970 and 1976. It is a 20ga. with a skeet bbl and a full choke bbl. I would like to buy a barrel for it that will allow me to put buckshot and slugs through it. Any idea on where I could find one?
 
Off by a decade? Oh well. Has the butt been modified or recoil pad replaced? The skeet barrel will be fine for slugs/large buckshot and may pattern very well. Ebay is a good source for inexpensive barrels if you can stomach them. There are codes stamped into the barrel over the chamber that can tell you when the barrel was made.

When shopping for barrels be careful to get an LW20 barrel. The LT20 barrels will not fit nor will (obviously) standard barrels.
I have not seen many LW barrels for sale but they must be out there somewhere.
My bride shoots an LT20 ('84 Special Field) and it is really sweet. The LT replaced the LW in the 1100 line-up (I think) but I do not know why.

Great little clays gun there. Congrats.

The LW, as indicated by your shop guy, was only made for a short time. I believe you need to make sure that any replacement barrel you find was made specifically for the LW.
 
I didn't think about LW vs. LT. The gunshop guy was exactly right. LT barrels will not fit without gunsmithing. You can still find LW barrels, but you have to know be sure what you're are buying.

Can I put buckshot through this shotgun or is it limited to only birdshot? The only two barrels I have are the fixed choke skeet and fixed full choke. I want to try shooting buckshot but I don't want to blow myself up either.

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.

You aren't going to blow yourself up. I'd reserve slugs for skeet barrel. The full barrel will likely be too tight for large buckshot to pattern well, but you are not going to hurt anything.

You have been given a very good shotgun. The skeet barrel will work with buck, you do need to pattern some. See the sticky up top.

Now, go shoot it.....
