We had a professor give a great lecture Friday night on "Feminism, Jurisprudence and the Criminal Justice System" followed by a group of us going to eat and drinks.
One of the group had a co-worker join us, and during the conversation we were discussing a range trip. This lady asked what we were talking about and was told that I have guns and was organizing a range trip for them. She was dismissive and I said (in a nice way ), "problem???". She stated she didn't like guns and saw no use for them, and I asked why the fear of inanimate objects?
She stated "I really don't want to discuss this with you or we will not end up liking each other", I said "nonsense, just agree that you have an irrational fear of inanimate objects" and we can move on. She sincerly did and we had another Margarita. Wish they all understood their own mindset so easily....

nicely done

I'll try that next time. But you are right, most will not go down so easily..

Always worth the effort, though.

Although not over booze, I always try and debate the issue with any anti I know. I figure if I can convert them, great. If not, and they feel my views make it impossible for us to get along, no loss there. But truth be told, I get along with a bunch of anti's. We all know each others viewpoints, we have found we will not change them, and we have moved on. We have other shared interests, and that is what counts. I thinks lifes to short not to have as many friends as possible.

I've had countless discussions with anti-gun folks, including a few of my relatives. I will NEVER argue with them, but I often use THEIR tactic of answering questions with another question. Example: (Anti-) "Why do you own guns?"; (Me) "Are you afraid of guns for some reason?" or "Why do you hate guns?"

It works, at least to a certain extent, for we live in this "ME" time, and most anti-'s are also extremely liberal and LOVE to talk about themselves and their opinions. More often than not, they will tell you that they "heard something" or "read something" about guns, and how evil they are. That's when I pounce! "Have you ever actually handled a firearm?"

I also like to pounce with the question of how they perceive certain individuals, especially the "classic" U.S. Senator Diane Finestein. "Is the good Senator anti- or pro-gun?", I ask (Yes, I even toss in the word "good", just to play with their mind). Of course, they have "seen" and "heard" things about that Senator, so they usually answer that she is anti-gun. POUNCE time! "Were you aware of the FACT that Senator Finestein has a valid concealed weapons permit?". I have also followed-up with "Senator Finestein has SAID how evil guns are, and she has always voted for more gun laws....and you seem to THINK that she is anti-gun from what you've heard and read....so, why is it that she feels the NEED to have a permit and carry a concealed weapon?". Oh, they almost always turn red when I ask, "Is Senator Finestein a liar, a hypocrite, or....both?"

I have a very nice family living next-door to me. The husband is now in private practise as an attorney, and his wife is a para-legal. When they first moved into the neighborhood, my first conversation with the husband was very cordial and interesting. He didn't come out and say that he was anti-gun, but that was what I perceived. He had just been hired as a prosecuting attorney for one of the neighboring cities, and hadn't actually dealt with criminal prosecutions at that time. It took him about 3 months as a prosecutor before his eyes were opened to the FACT that his employment placed him in jeopardy. When he was involved in a multiple-defendant trial involving gang members, he applied for....and was granted....a CCW permit! To "celebrate" the occasion, I took him down to the nearby police shooting range for some target practise and additional CCW training. Score ONE!
Add to that, he has seen me loading my truck with rifles and ammo before going out shooting, and he now wants to buy a good rifle and shotgun! Not all lawyers are stoopid liberals!
