Now I really feel dumb! And yes, I want my booby prize! Should have read closer.
:)

library guy, Yes, I am using the front post and not the wings. I actually double checked that when I was so far off. It will be seeing a gunsmith soon.

Probably got leaned up against the back of a truck while the issuee was preparing to get in the back. Driver stepped on the clutch to start the truck, and the vehicle rolled back bending the barrel!

Don't ask me how I know this is what bent the barrel! But that scenerio will damn sure bend the M16A1 barrel.

I have built numerous National Match rifles when I was shooting competition and I recall one rifle that shot that far off to one side. Upon removing the barrel and putting it between centers I discovered that the shoulder and threads were cut “out of parallel with the bore. This made the bore at an angle to the centerline of the receiver therefore the line between the rear sight and the back off the case head was several degrees off from the centerline of the bore and chamber.. Thus a triangle is formed by the line of sight between the front and rear sight, the rear sight to the case head and the case head to the front sight.
This caused the extreme change of point of impact and line of sight.

I hope this makes since to you.

Vern

Edited to say that someone probably placed the barrel in a lathe chuck to cut the treads and failed to indicate the barrel in to true position and on centerline before they cut the threads.

Just took it back to the range. Found the paper at 25y, 50y, and 75y. I couldn't see the targets on the paper I was using at 100 because they were not the standard 8 inch black circle. I am now on target, but grouping badly. This is probably due to me not getting a super consistant sight picture. Using the sling from the prone, I get about 5 inch groups at 75 yards, centered around the bulls eye. The group is 5 inches high, and about 2 inches wide, but I believe that is me, not the gun.

The problem before is this... I started out shooting low, well below the paper (the rear sight was only 1 click above bottomed out, this time I started out 8 clicks which is 2 before 200) and the backing board was so chewed up my spotter thought I was far left. We built a new backer board about 5X5 feet so we could see any errant shots. Never missed the paper.

scythefwd, what did you change or fix to get on paper?

My first reaction was the rifle was not bedded properly, second reaction was the barrel was not indexed (vertically) properly or was bent.

send it to Clint at fulton Armory

fultonarmory.com

you can have them fix it up or just trade it in for one of their new rebuilt ones.

best to take it to a firm that specalizes in them rather than a local gunsmith

I would not send the rifle to any one just yet. I would clean the copper out of the bore first. I would also figure out what I had. Some M-1's are worth messing with while others are worth not messing with even though it has wide groups. I sent in a post war Springer to be match tuned and then figured out later I had sent in a non rebuilt correct post war.

10x, not bedded. I started off shooting way low because I had the rear sight set at +1 from bottomed out (like I would have on my 16). After finding better info, I started at 8+ from bottomed out on the rear site and was on target.

onemsumba,
The rifle is in great condidtion, I see no need to get it rebuilt as the problem was with the shooter, not the rifle.

P-32,
It isn't all original, and therefore not a collector. It shoots well, and that fits my needs/wants.

mythbuster,
thanks for the link. I plan on having it bedded and having the barrel floated later this summer before hunting season anyways. Later I will have the oprod/gas tube worked on, then maybe a trigger job, and later nm front post and hooded aperature. I am positive the poor grouping was my fault though. I was using a target for sighting in scoped guns, not the standard 8 inch black target. It is a bunch on concentric rings, like most targets, but there is no solid black ring on the target other than the divider lines. I will be coloring in the space between the 8-9 ring so I have a nice open hole in the middle of the target to really focus on.

Hey swampy
You doing any shooting at bucksnort this year?

steve

Steve,

I missed the May & June events due to conflicts. I'm hoping to be there for the Planet Matches in August and the LR in October.

Best,
Swampy
