My Goodness, the Cosmoline (New Mosin)

Just a little late Christmas present to myself.

1942 production Mosin-Nagant 91/30


I think I got more cosmoline than rifle. Got most of it off with paper towels until I can swing by the Home Depot for some mineral spirits. I'm glad I found one with a bayonet.


Hopefully it shoots as good as it looks.
Anyway. Post 'em if you got 'em.

I have tried to put the Bayonet on mine, I would need a sledge hammer to get it on and who knows what to take it back off.

This bayonet goes on pretty easy, but getting it off was a pain. I'd leave it on (as was intended), but I don't have a rifle case long enough and storing it would be annoying.

Cosmoline can be removed with boiling water. Field strip and lay the parts on a screen or grill over a bucket. Pour boiling water over them. The water will melt and wash away the cosmoline and the heat will dry it straight away. Prop the barreled action in the bucket and pour the water over it and it will clean it.

Congrats on your purchase of our first Mosin. You've made an excellent choice.

Regarding cosmoline, Breakfree CLP cuts it like butter and gets rid of the stickiness. That's the best solution in my experience. Spray some Breakfree on a paper towel and just wipe it off.

I just so happen to have a mostly full can of Break Free.
I'll give it a shot.

What mac66 said, I used boiling water on mine and than sprayed it with wd-40 because it displaces water.

Only malfunctions I ever had with my com-block mil-surps (a Makarov, an SKS, and an AK as I recall) was before I understood that cosmoline wasn't intended to be some sort of lubricant and that you actually needed to clean it out.

Umm yeah, I'm lucky I didn't hurt myself.

I used lots of boiling water to get the cosmoline out of my M44 many moons ago.
