I've had a very surprising month. Late May I got two new handguns (a G29 and XS-45) and this past Friday I added a new Bushmaster E2S. :D All guns were NIB.

Here's a couple family photos:

I believe it'll be quite a while before I have a windfall like this one! :)

nice pics. ;)

Nitesight, and others, I know this thread is mainly aimed at AR/AK owneres, but - if some night while you're sipping on a cool beer and got nothing better to do - would you mind offering a few thoughts about that particular rifle (in terms of maker, caliber, options, etc) and - more importantly - why that particular model is exciting to you? (asks a guy who hasn't much studied AR's and AK's, but still feels a tinge of excitement and desire every time he sees one...).

My motivation for this request: I've looked a bit at some web sites re AK/AR's, and am always a bit intimidated by the HUGE number of options, model numbers, etc. I just wouldn't know exactly where to start if I wanted to research buying one.

Thanks,

Nem (who is mostly a shotgun & pistol guy whose only current rifle is a CZ-452 in .22LR, who is pining for a bolt action deer rifle before going towards semi-auto's someday...)

It's really not as bad as it appears, although it does take a while to understand all the variations. Without getting into the AK and all the associated opinions on AK's versus AR's, I'll just give you a quick overview of AR's.

What you're seeing here is more of a varmint/target oriented orientation of the AR with a longer, lighter barrel and fixed stock. The other general variation would be that of what's refered to as an M-4, which has a shorter barrel and collapsable stock...more typically seen in special forces or SWAT use and more oriented toward self-defense. So it really depends on what you want the rifle for.

When it comes to barrel twist rates, chromed barrels, etc. there area lots of variations for different specialized purposes, but most of the manufacturers offer what is most commonly used by most people, so don't drive yourself nuts there.

The big thing about AR's is that they can be specialized, but you need to know what you're getting into when you do it as it always involves some sort of trade-off. Go with a major manufacturer on a standard model such as Bushmaster or Rock River Arms and you'll end up in good shape. I would highly recommend you get an A3 upper which uses a detachable handle rather than the A2 fixed handle as it's more flexible in terms of optics. If you get to the point of wanting to specialize an AR it's simple enough to buy the individual pieces and build it yourself.

Here's a pic of one of my AR's that I built:

DunedinDragon that is a NICE AR!

That is EXACTLY what i want my next one to be. Would you be so kind to list the mods and additions you did there, so I can start to price out my purchase. Thanks!

DunedinDragon, thanks very much for that clarification. It helps a lot.

Yes, if I buy one (which won't be soon, probably, cause I've got my eye on a deer rifle first), it would be more self-defense/SHTF oriented.

Good point, also, about sight options. I hear you. And I also hear you re Bushmaster and Rock River. I've actually spent some time on their web sites (and on review articles about their guns) over the last year or so.

If anyone knows of an information-ladden THR (or other) thread on the distinctions between ARs & AKs for newbies like me (to those particular rifles), it'd be great if you could post a link here. I've done some searching on THR about that topic (again, not at the top of my list yet, so haven't searched too hard), but haven't yet found the one I'm looking for.

Thanks, all. Interesting thread.

Nem
