You are correct, Gordon, I gutted the gun out as directed by Mike Gouse, sending only the frame, cylinder, crane, and sideplate with screws. The little doohickey that works the cylinder latch was also left in place. The gun does not need to be refinished. He puts "something" in the cuts but he doesn't harm the finish, that I can see. If you give Mike Gouse a call he is very personable and will give you the lowdown.
I have since reassembled the gun and all parts are in their proper places. I have some old magna grips on it just so it doesn't look nekkid... Here are a few more views -
