Just have to nibble on it a bit. It should actually make three. I figure I've got a 50/50 chance of getting one good one out of it.

I do. Another member dropped a PDF on me. I'll check with him to see if it's okay to share. It looks very similar to the Yavapai jig. Never having seen one in person, I assume it's about the same size. I've got an idea I want to try which should offer a bit more barrel end support, but I'm going to build it per plan to start with. It's probably fine the way it is.

I'll post additional pics as I progress along.

The plans call for a total width of 5.5". The hunk I found will only allow a width of about 5". So, step one was to cut up the bar into three pieces. Rough dimensions at this point are 2" x 3-1/8" x 5-1/8".

I guess the next step will be to face mill the two largest sides and get it close to the specified 1-3/4" width. And then trim and square up the 4 smaller sides.

Found a nice surprise when I went to chuck up my new face cutter. The R-8 arbor didn't fit my draw bar. I'll leave everything a bit oversized so I can go back and clean up the sides with the replacement fly cutter.

It dawned on me that I don't want to mill the largest side first, as that would give my the best clamping surface. So, I milled the second largest side. Still slightly oversized, but nice and flat. Measures 3.0355" at each end. Next up, I'll true the 2"x3" ends.

I got a much smoother finish this time. I left the feed speed alone and used a bit of cutting oil.

I've got a Grizzly G3103. I do check in at cnczone from time to time, but I haven't even joined up yet.

Here's the block sized up as close as I'll mess with for now. I left enough material to come back and clean up with the fly cutter once everything else is done. I didn't get a chance to work on it last night and probably won't tonight (darned taxes).

I did get a few minutes to play after all. Started the first cut. I'll need to reposition the end mill in the collet to get the cut any deeper. It needs to go another half inch or so.

Lookin' good Matt...

Nice mill too.... I'm playing with their smaller dovetail collumn mill....

and have bought most of what I need to set it up for CNC...

Have you tried cutting a slide for Novak cuts yet?

Keep posting your progress.... there's at least one gunsmith/machinist wanna be out here watching with interest.

I looked at that mill for some time and almost ordered it.

Funny you asked about Novak cuts. My other browser window is open to Brownells so I can order a couple of sight cutters. Should be here early next week. Whether or not I'll work up the courage to cut them right away is another thing.

Sorry to hijack, but I have an unused Syil America Super X-3 CNC mill with an Acer PC and all software ($5000.00 invested) with high-speed kit and the tool holder accessories I'll sell for $3000,00...

I have the Seig X2. I really enjoy it. Here's a before and after. This is my project Norinco 1911 - slide before:

That looks great, Schmeky!

I've got an Officer's slide I need to install some Novak's on. This was the ugliest Colt slide I'd ever seen. There were fly cutter marks every 1/32" or so on both sides of the slide. Those are now gone. ☺ (Used a lapping plate for that job.)

I'm also going to have a shot at flat topping and serrating the slide, as well as beveling the bottom edges, some border cuts, and a few other touches.

Got a larger carbide end mill in today that I needed to go much further. I'm a little distracted right now, though, as my new lathe also arrived today. :)

I finally got the replacement arbor for my face mill yesterday. Uh, a 2" face mill cuts a REALLY NICE surface! Just a bit quicker than using a 5/16" end mill to surface, too.

Vet,

Give me a couple of days and I'll let you know how I like the lathe. The stand came Friday and I unboxed it last night. I hope to get some time this afternoon to bolt it all together.

I went ahead and got their QC tool post and a set of their carbide tools, as well as a nice keyless chuck for the tailstock. I hope I have everything I need to start using it right away. My father's already signed in with a few parts needing turning, get this, for a tube amplifier in the microwave frequency range.

The first few little parts sure came out nicely. Especially since the part I needed to mount the chuck was MIA. The copper end caps needed a .440" hole centered in it. I ended up chucking a 1/4" end mill in the tool holder and shimmed it so it was close to center. Then used the x feed to enlarge the hole to .440".

So far I like the G0602. :)
