Well, I finally got in my Magpul order... and after several minutes of fiddling around with getting the handguard off, (BARE HANDS!!!!!!) I installed everything and must say, I am very happy with it!!!...

I will still have to adjust the sights a bit, likely bring the rear sight back another notch or two... Then, once I add some sort of holographic optic, I will have my bare bones, light-weight AR "need" filled.:D

a few pictures for your viewing pleasure.

I must say, i was surprised at the feel of the MOE stock and handguard. It has a much more sturdy/heavy feel that I expected and I like the flip-ups, I am a little let down that the front sight doesnt have the clearance at present ( blame is on the gas block) to fold down, but that is a non-issue, as long as the sight is sitting high enough to allow an appropriate zero, I am not at all worried. If, however, it causes me to shoot high, I will just have to opt for a new gas block.

So, am I missing anything, anything else I "NEED" to add?

I would also get the Magpul MIAD grip in the flat dark earth color if I were you...and possibly exchange the black AFG with a flat dark earth as well, just my opinion of course.

I have every intention of the MIAD grip in Flat dark earth... probably going to be ordering it and some PMAGS (same color) next week. As to the AFG, I actually like the contrast it adds to the overall gun... I will def post some more pictures when I get the other items in, but until then, i suppose I will just have to make myself get by.:D:D

The black AFG is growing on me, I think with the MIAD grip and mags being flat dark earth the black AFG will bring color balance to the rifle.

Thumbs up.

That is the theory... I appreciate your input and will update as I can.. .hopefully it will turn out pretty close to the picture in my head....

Anyone able to offer up some opinions/personal reviews of magpul merchandise. Best I can tell, the flip ups and stock/handguard seem to be pretty damn sturdy.. not any play at all (which is NOT what I was expecting) and I am happy with the AFG and its overall feel. I was a bit worried as I had not handled one prior to installing this one.

I own a moderate amount of Magpul stuff. Comments based on stuff I own:

Magpul MOE buttstock - very good. Surprisingly solid feel. Unfortunately it doesn't have a sling slot in the right place to work with many M4 type slings, a big mistake IMHO.

Magpul MOE handguards - very good. I am not as impressed as you are with solidity as mine are a bit loose on a Shrubmaster, where the OEM handguards weren't. But they are pretty good, especially for the price.

Magpul MOE pistol grip - pretty close to junk IMHO. I like it less than an A2 grip. It stayed on my AR for only a few weeks before getting replaced. Maybe the MIAD is better, but skip the MOE and get a Hogue, ATI, Ergo, or almost anything else.

Pmags - what is there to say?

Haven't used the MBUIS.

The Magpul-branded polymer rails for the MOE handguards are nice and reasonably priced.

Have you shot it yet? I'm skeptical that your sight arrangement will work for you. MBUS are made to attach to rails that are on plane with the upper receiver. Your picatinny gas block is lower than this plane. I can see in one of your pictures that you have the front sight post jacked way up, but I don't know if that's going to be enough and it's definitely not a preferred setup (not to mention, you can't fold the sight down). You could fix it by getting a different sight (I'm a fan of the USGI FSB), or by replacing with a receiver-height gas block.

Check out these front sights from MI. See the difference in height? here

And you are correct, your rear sight should be as far back as you can get it. The farther from your eye it is, the harder it will be to see through the small aperture and line up your sights.

I noticed that Mr. Clean, I will be taking it out tomorrow to see whether or not the current setup will work appropriately, it is possible I will need some sort of riser...

Not so worried about not being able to fold the sight down, I can remedy that pretty easily.

Worst case scenario, I will just replace the gas block and use a riser in its place in the mean time...

Good observation!!!

Just an aside, the front sight actually came out of the box set up that high, I just opted to leave it for the moment until I have an opportunity to shoot it and see where the current setup is hitting/capable of hitting.

I am a fan of Magpul products. The Pmag is IMO the best mag out for the ARs. My dept allows certain Magpul products on our patrol rifles and I have never seen a magpul product fail.

Ive been eyeing the buttstocks and I think Im gonna get one for my next build.

I'd move the rear as far back as it can go. More sight radius and better sight picture since your eye will be closer to the peep (the distance it is designed for). You'll definitely need to raise that front sight. Another benefit of a spacer for the gas block is it will also absorb some heat as well, I'd keep a close eye on a polymer sight on a gas block during rapid fire.

Looks good, go shoot it!

It looks like you ran across the industry problem with no standardized railed gas block. The first designs were low, and sights were made for them specifically. Then shooters started using quad rails, and the older sights were too tall. It's not very obvious in product descriptions which one you get. About the only clue you get is the phrase "rail height."

It's a significant stage of EBR when you can see that in photos.

The other area of concern is that Magpul does not recommend using their MBUS front sight on an active gas block. It gets too hot if - if - repeated mag dumps are part of the fun. Their FRN composition does have a melting point, and apparently it can. Full auto SBR owners are aware FRN handguards will soften and distort.

YMMV, a semi auto hunter or plinker may never see the elevated temps. It's best to know beforehand, tho.

I appreciate the input and info about the potential for the gas block heating up... It had crossed my mind, but it isnt a huge concern of mine as "mag dumps' simply arent my style.. I am more interested in actually hitting whatever it is I am taking aim at... "taking aim" being the key phrase. I have an old riser around here somewhere, I will try to find it. If however, after I try a few different things, the front site shows itself to be an issue, I will just have to get a fixed front sight and replace the gas block...

Updated pictures with a riser to position the front sight appropriately and with the rear sight moved back as far as is practical without effecting the use of the charging handle while folded down.... Will be getting the new pistol grip (minor oversight on my first order) as well as a couple of Pmags next week.

Ignore the toes!!!
