Husqvarna 640 FN Commercial 98 action chambered in 8x57 IS. German engineering, Belgian receiver, Swedish steel barrel. Ausgezeichnet! Diese Gewehr ist sehr gut!

Now, there's some small specks of rust on the metal surface on the barrel and magazine floor plate. What's the best way to remove them? 0000 steel wool and gun oil? And how should I clean up the stock and maybe give it a good protective finish?

I love the European Mausers EXCEPT for the stocks. Seems they all, even current production CZ's, have LOTS of drop so as to make use of open sights. Problem is it makes the rifles kick like Sister Sarah's mule!
Nice rifle!

35W

This one doesn't have too much drop, it's actually pretty straight, unlike those Mannlicher style stocks. But man, does this gun handle and come to shoulder quickly and smoothly. I feel like I could hunt African animals with this rifle and the 8x57 catridge. Brings one back to ol' Colonial times. I wish I had the sight hood, it adds flavour to it.

dakota,

Date of manufacture may be underneath the forward most scope rail/mount. I know that that is the location of my date of manufacture (1936) for my DSM 8x57..it's all original brought back by my father from the Bulge. It's a shooter with no optics...pure irons and shoots more accurate than I ever could. Love the mauser action in its original form...if that rifle could only talk! Enjoy yours as well..you'll love it I'm sure.

Nein, die Amerikanische Technik, Springfield 1903, ist ein Mauser 98 Aktion!

I had one of these fine rifles and foolishly sold it.

8mm commercial ammo is loaded pretty weak, but hand loading for it will make it a useful hunting cartridge for darn near anything on this continent.

8mm commercial ammo is loaded pretty weak,
It is a fact that American ammo is underloaded for the 8x57(and for dang good reason) but it is FAR from weak! I have shot several medium sized whitetail with mine and the effect of the 170 grain silver tips and core-locts was nothing short of amazing. The meat damage always exceedes that of my 30.06 with 150gr or my .308 with 165gr in the same bullet styles. Unless big bears are the quarry(and maybe moose) you certainly aren't undergunned with factory loaded 8x57mm. Underloaded yes but weak??? not a chance!

American 8x57 is loaded equivalent to .30-30 Winchester. European 8x57 is loaded to 30-06 roughly.

Well however you want to look at it, 8x57 is a good and often overlooked cartridge. I like it.

Very Nice. I have a pair of these, one in 6.5 Swede and the other a 9.3X57, although the 6.5 is a '96.

Hey Dakota, when you get some time could you please, please post some detailed pics of both your sights? I'm having difficulty trying to figure out what I need for both my rear sight, and the bead & hood for the front ramp that one of our members here sent me.......:D

El Mariachi, my rear sight has 2 flaps in addition to the standard 100m fixed rear sight. The rear flap is for 500m, and the front flap is for 200m. Bead is a plain white bead. Will get more pics up soon. I need a front sight hood!
