I just picked up my first .22 revolver--a S&W model 63 no-dash with a 4-inch barrel. It seems very little to me (I'm used to big .357s and .44s) but I can tell this is going to be a big gun among its 5 and 6-shot brethren. The first thing I noticed is how small and lightweight the J frame is. This little gun is quite portable. Right now it lives in my toolbox that I take on road trips--that way it will always be around to shoot.
I cleaned up the little 63 throughly when I got home. The ejector rod had a sticky feel to it, and the cylinder didn't spin very well. A few dabs of oil fixed both of those issues. I don't think the gun has seen any oil in some time. Only a faint turn line exists so I don't believe it has been shot much. Other than a screw gouge on the top sight (the forward screw) it looks to be brand in otherwise pristine condition. It originally came with the plastic packmayr grips, but I thought the walnut grips more fitting so I put them on to dress the gun up a bit.
I did notice the spurred hammer was a little tough to pull back. Perhaps because of the short length of the hammer in this J-frame? Another idea that came to mind is the gun probably needs to be oiled inside. Would it do any good to pour a few drops of oil into the frame by the hammer?
BTW, I am curious as to when this gun was made. The serial starts with M1415XX. If anyone could help date it I'd appreciate it!
