My new long range rifle project is done!

I treated myself to a new rifle as a Christmas present to myself this year. This is a budget build so the hardcore benchresters/snipers/varminters will likely be unimpressed. The goal was to have a rifle capable of 1,000 yards for under $1,500. After lots of googling and reading reviews and what not this is what i came up with

Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308 26" varmint contour barrel (same barreled action as the 700P)

Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock with aluminum bedding block

Millett LRS-1 6-25x56mm with illuminated mil-dot/bar reticle, side focus, target turrets and .1 mil click adjustments, and knobs resettable to zero

Burris XTR two peice picatinny bases

TPS steel 35mm rings

Harris bipod 9-13 inch with notched legs.

i had to break out the rat tail file and relieve the bottom part of the grip so my fat mits could fit in there:

this should be a great starter package for my intro to long range shooting and the rem 700 action is a great base for a custom rifle later on. this is all common stuff that i got at the local gun shop and from Midway, combatstocks.com etc. nothing custom or special order.

range day is the 17th. can't wait 'til then!

Good for you man! That's a perfect rifle to start LR shooting. Your going to have a ton of fun with that thing. I'm currently in the same shoes as you, but I don't have my rifle yet! haha Still I will be going with the R700 SPS action. Let me know how the scope turns out. I'm looking at the Falcon 4.5x18x56 and the WoTac 4x14x50. Just want a scope decent enough to get me out to 800yds at least. Have fun with your new build and congradulations!
 
range report will follow after the 17th! i'm curious about the scope too. i've read mostly positive, but a few negative reports on it. for the price it has a ton of features and pretty nice glass. i doubt recoil will harm it, the gun weighs in at 15 pounds. on 25x, the eye box gets small as one would expect but it stays bright and clear. so far, i like it but am a little leery. the first one i got i had to send back to Midway and exchange it for a new one. when i lined up the crosshairs on a plumb bob, the turrets were about 4 or 5 degrees rotated clockwise. this one is fine though. i'll report back on it after i wring it out on the range.

I'm very happy for you. That looks like a wonderfully sound and reliable shooting platform. I'll be checking back after range day for your report.

Given your way cool rifle, what ammo are you intending to shoot?

i picked up sever kinds. i got some Hornaday 168 BTHP and 155 AMax's, Federal's 168 Gold Medal Match, and some HSM 168 BTHP match and 168 Amax's. i'd like to find some Lapua 155 scenars for a somewhat reasonable price and try those too being as i think they'll do well in the 1:12 twist barrel and still remain supersonic past 1,200 yards. i think i'll just have to bite the bullet, so to speak, and pay the $42/20 for them. whichever gives the best consistency is the one i'll stick with until i start reloading. i'm not sure when that's going to happen. perhaps this time next year.

Bobarino: Hand load... for accuracy there is no other option.
Nice rifle... also look at the Savage platform. Might save a few bucks and improve performance. :cheers:
 
thanks all! i'll get into handloading when time and money allow. i'll be sure to give a full range report as soon as i can.

i looked as some Savage rifles as well and would have no qualms about buying and using one. they have great reputations. i like the 700 for all the aftermarket stuff and the fact that every gunsmith out there knows them. i really just wanted the barreled action and this was the cheapest way to get that and not feel bad about tossing the stock. the one that comes on the SPS Varmint is a flimsy plastic piece of junk.

i like to tinker with my stuff and make it juuuuuust the way i want it, hence the reshaping of the lower grip area to be more comfy. i need to fire polish the plastic still. looks all greyish in the areas i sanded now.

my hopes are high for range day. i guess we'll find out then if i did an ok job :)

Very wise choices and you have done a great job. Now get ready for the real fun....shooting that sweet rifle.

Try some 175 grn SMK rounds, either Federal or Black Hills, the 168's (except A-max) will not do well beyond 800-900 yrds. The 155's and 175's will handle 1000 + yrds.
