got the new toys out to the range today! put together a rifle last month and promised i'd do a review of it and the scope when i made it to the range so here it is. the Rifle is a Rem SPS Varmint .308 barreled action in a Choate Ultimate Varmint stock and topped with Burris bases, TPS 35mm rings and a Millett LRS1 6-25x56mm with mil dot/bar reticle and .1mil click adjustments.
first off, the rifle: It's a Rem 700. not much more to be said about it than that. the SPS Varmint uses the same barreled action as the 700P except it's painted and not parkerized. it's their 26" heavy/varmint contour, .820" at the muzzle and it has the X-Mark Pro trigger. here's the gun:
and she is a shooter! here's my best group of the day. 7 shots, 300 yards, 1 3/16"! this was with Hornady's 155 grain Amax Match. i am STOKED!
i also posted a 1 3/4" 5 shot group with 168 Gold Medal Match:
and a couple others just over 2 inches. and one REALLY ugly one at 4 inches. mind you, this is at 300 yards!
a few people asked me for a review on the scope. my first impression wasn't so hot. i ordered one from Midway and the reticle and the turrets were not aligned. i sent it back and they got me one back asap that was just fine. being an odd tube size (35mm) it comes with a set of rings. they're knock offs of the Burris XTR's and have 6 screws on each cap. the bad news is, they are WAY too high. they leave the objective about 7/8" off the barrel. i didn't want to, but i but the bullet and got some TPS low steel rings for $125. they are very nicely machined and work perfectly with my setup. the bell is now 1/8" off the barrel.
the click adjustments are nice and positive and audible. they are resettable to zero so after i zeroed at 100 yards i reset the knobs to zero and used that for my baseline. this scope has 140 MOA of adjustment built in. out to 300 yards and up to 25x! the glass in it is pretty dang good! no fuzzy edges or darkening even on 25x. the reticle is laser etched into a lens and is illuminated which helped a bit when the eyes started getting tired. i figured bullet drop at 300, made 9 clicks up and bingo! right on the money. 2 more clicks for 168 grain. the side focus works great and the friction locks for the turrets were nice in case i bumped it or something. it held zero perfectly. i am quite pleased with it to say the least. i spent a little time making head shots on the 300 yard steel plate human silhouette. once dialed in, it's just point and click.
if i did my part, the scope and rifle were even better than i had expected. under 1/2 moa consistently. possibly even better with a better shooter behind the trigger. this is my very first time shooting long range anything. hopefully the groups will only get smaller from here on out. tipping the scales at 15 pounds, this thing is a pussycat to shoot. you could shoot it all day.
i also had a chance to sight in my EOTech 512. these things are great! using a GPS Grip-pod, i was getting some really great groups at 50m with cheap ADCOM M855. that 1 MOA dot is nice and precise. with a little holdover, i was able to ring the gong at 300 yards pretty easily.
i got some William's Firesights (part #70742) for my Marlin 60 since i've never really liked the stock sights. they were a good bit more precise than the stock sights and much easier on the eyes. they were $30 and well worth it.
my GF came with today too! here's a couple pics to end with.
i even talked her into squeezing off a round in the .308 too.

5 hours worth of recoil therapy was just what the Dr. ordered. got everything sighted in and wrung out. great day!

that's why they make so many different options. it's nice to be able to have a VFG for offhand shooting and the bipod for prone & bench. i was ringing the 300 yard gong with it pretty consistently. this setup works really well for me.
