Thanks to my father's efforts, I have access to copious American chestnut timbers, and a few logs that were used as floor joists. After making a small shadow box for a deceased relatives decorations, I am thouroughly impressed with the beauty of the wood. My first small project will be a set of handguards for my AK. Updates to follow.

I say this with all due respect toward the freedom to do what you want with your belongings. But using precious chestnut on an AK would be like gold plating an adjustable wrench.

But please do keep us informed, you might even change my mind.:D

True, but I'd like to start out small rather than cutting a full size blank for something nicer. You have me thinking now.... Gold plating, or hard chrome...

It sounds as if you have thought it out carefully. Sorry for the overly wet blanket. Good luck and please post the results.

plastic handguards on an AK are an excellent investment. They don't get very hot at all! even under sustained rapid fire.

If you do any trimming you could save some smaller pieces for grips for your favorite pistol?
