About three weeks ago I was shopping at a semi-LGS and actually found some bullets for Mom's old rifle which was an anniversary present from my father. I then traveled several miles north to another semi-LGS and found some empty cases for same rifle. I set them on the counter and the gentleman asked if there was anything else, to which I replied "I'm here to spend money." He said, "I can help you with that" and placed a Ruger 1-H Tropical chambered for the .405 Winchester in my hands. Ten or fifteen seconds later I handed it back to him and I said, "I'll take it."

I have wanted one of these for a very long time, and it happened to be on sale as well- just a tick under $770, brand new. Gorgeous rifle. I felt like I had practically stolen it.

So today I went out and fired ten rounds at about 50 yards or so just to test the function of the rifle, which was flawless. As poor as my eyesight is, I actually put three of the rounds inside the "diamond" and five others hit the paper, all standing up. I'm not really intending to be boasting but I'm not complaining, either. I do like the open sights; I've never been a 'scopester'.

The recoil from this rifle wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, I figured it would send me into the next state but it was more like a stout shotgun load. I have yet to shoot the .405 that Mom had, though- it's an original 1895 Winchester... she said she shot it once and it placed her in a horizontal position in very short order.

In sum, a very fun rifle to shoot but not one I would put 100 rounds through in a single session.

It really should be a rule that all threads involving something new are required to have pics!

Looks great! What's the deal with the band on the barrel?

...and if it's something in a cool caliber, the pic should involve a couple cartridges too!

And some video of reactive targets.

There was an article on the Ruger No 1 chambered for the 405 WCF, perhaps HANDLOADER magazine. I believe it was written by Barseness. Anyway, with the Ruger he was able to take the loads into territory that would be right on the heels of the 450/400. I no longer have hard copies of those magazines but will see if I have any info to share. It was interesting but because I have a Winchester 1895, 405 WCF, it was not useful to me.

Thank you for the compliments, y'all!

'333, that is also one gorgeous rifle!

StrawHat, I think I have that identical HANDLOADER magazine, it was published only a month or two ago. I was also hoping to get reloading data as I have an original '95 as well but no-go.

I love Ruger No. 1s, but the largest caliber I prefer now is .308. wish I could find one in .257 Roberts, they are scarce and not cheap. a buddy just bought his wife a new one in .22-250 for $1,100.

I have a #1V in .223. It has recycled innumerable ground squirrels and is the only rifle I have ever bought simply because I like the way it looks.

Nice rifle!

I had a #1 re-barreled to .405 many moons ago. You can safely load bullets intended for the .41 Mag up to the 400 gr pills for the .450/400. Mine really liked the Woodliegh soft points.

One of those rifles that makes all your other rifles redundant. :)

Hands down, the stupidest trade I ever made was a #1 in .270 straight up for a brand new Ruger P90. The P90 provided 18 years of excellent service and I shot the snot out if it right up until I sold it earlier this year, but boy what a bonehead trade that was. I was a kid in my early 20's though, and a single shot rifle just had no appeal at that time.
