original thread...

So I finally bought this SKS from my cousin on Tuesday. For $250 I got everything shown in the pic. It came with the black stock, home made sling, scope, scope mount, some Wolf 154 gr SP, 100 rounds of 45 ACP, and the case. Honestly I have so many cases I might just give this back to him because I have no place to put it.

here it is again as I put the original stock back on next to my AK.

As we have determined, it's a russian 1954 refurbished SKS. This gun had not been touched, fired, or cleaned for at least a couple of years. There were small rust spots all over from the cover to the barrel. I gave it a good wash with wd40 and wiped everything down. The dirtiest part was of course the bolt and assembly.

It was in better shape that I had originally thought it would be. I don't think it has been fired much compared to my ak. I got over 2500 rounds through that thing and the piston is blackened. I could be wrong about that.

Anyways, I plan on making it "original again". All parts are matching. It is missing the bayonet, cleaning rod, sling, cleaning kit and butt plate cover, and the rear dust cover pin.

I had some stripper clips I bought from a LGS. They don't seem to fit the bolt... like they are bigger and can't seem to slide in. Other than that, where is a good place I could get "original" parts for this gun? It doesn't have to be perfect, just somewhat decent and matching.

oh and it also came with the 30 round mag which is junk. Don't know what brand it is but it will hold all 30 but will only be reliable if you put like 15-20. i'm ditching that and the scope mount. (scope mount is B Square brand)

the wood stock looks a lot better! Was the bolt blued? I cant tell from the picture, it could just be a shadow.

Love the SKS!

Considering the extras and ammo, you basically got a Russian refurb for about 2 bills...great deal. I have 6, a russian, yugo, and 4 chinese. I buy everyone I can find if for a good price. I too bought my first one in the early 90's for 100 bucks, but those days are long gone and 300 is about the best I can find now...still a good deal for a semi-auto battle rifle. I know a guy who is selling a Yugo and about 6 boxes of ammo for 300, and as soon as I replenish my fun $, I'm buying it.

Nice Sks.
Numrich and Apex have most of the parts you need. They are chinese but should work.
Aim surplus has Albanian takedown latches. Should work.
The bayonet may be found on the various gunboards. You can use a chinese blade bayo if your bayo lug is the later type.

Congrats! It definitely looks much better in stock configuration with the wooden stock. I think all you really need is the bayonet and sling.

Some of the Russian refurbs have a nice bluing or parked finish under that paint. I have one that appears to have a dark grey park under the paint. I'm debating stripping the paint off of it.
You got a good deal. You can finish it off with the correct parts and your still ahead.
