Today I went to Cabella's with the intention of buying either a second AK or an AR. Instead I got my hands on a Yugoslavian SKS M59/66A1. Manufactured by Zastava. It has 100% of its finish, and the stock isn't dented, chipped or cracked anywhere. Overall I am extremely excited to use this rifle. However, I have never cleaned off cosmoline. Do any of you have any tips?

Sorry for the crappy pictures, I dont have a digital camera right now so a cellphone is the best I can do!

Hi...I just bought another Yugo SKS 59/66 yesterday as well. Enjoy your new weapon!

Cleaning tips...go to surplusrifle.com and click the link for the SKS carbine...it will link you to video and pictures of how to dissassemble the rifle and bolt assembly.

Once taken apart....you can clean all the metal parts by soaking in a large pot of boiling water for a a few minutes. Once done, remove, let cool and dry, then oil lightly. Make sure you take the bolt apart and clean it. Do not use anything else...you will be frustrated...boiling water works in minutes and is FREE.

You can remove cosmoline from your wooden stock by placing it over the same pot of boiling water and steaming it from the wood. Do it in sections. Wipe with a cloth.

It took me several hours yesterday to clean the Yugo I bought....the bore looked like crap and the stock was broken, full of dirt and dead leaves. It now only looks sligtly better, but I have no doubt it will go bang.

Have fun, too...it will truly be your gun once you have done this....

Thank you everyone very much for the links. I really appreciate it.
Fortunately my yugo doesnt seem to have TOO much cosmolene in/on it so it should be relatively easy. One thing I am worried about, can the stock warp by steaming it like that? I considered picking up a polymer dragunov type stock today but decided against it.

Im sorry to hear that yours is so beat up Bill, I wish you the best of luck in bringing it up to shape and I hope it treats you well!

:D :D :D after about 3 hours I managed to get all of the cosmoline off of the metal parts, and the majority of it from the wood. I cannot wait to shoot it. The bore looks GREAT, but the stock does need some sanding in a few spots. oh well i am still extremely pleased with the rifle thus far. thanks again everyone

Use gas an a lot of rags,go to yahoo ;just put in (sks) then go to collecting and shooting the sks.....

Buy the cheapest brake cleaner you can find, and make sure you take every bit of the gas tube assembly apart and clean it thoroughly. Squirt brake cleaner in there; you'll be amazed where cosmoline shows up! Take the stock off, wrap it in aluminum foil, then place it inside of black garbage bags, then sit it on the dashboard of your car in the warmest spot you can find. Cosmoline will ooze out of it! When you shoot it, the heat will cause more cosmoline to ooze out of it!

And when you finally get through with all that crap, SHOOT IT! Man, I fired mine for the first time last weekend and it was WONDERFUL!

What a beaut! Congrats
