I've had a Taurus PT1911 for a wee bit now, but I would like another one/better one. I've narrowed down to these 4: Rock Island 1911, FireStorm 1911, Springfield GI, Charles Daly M5. Please try not to give me another choice. I appreciate your opinions, but I do NOT want to hear about how great kimbers are, etc. :banghead: I just want to know, out of THESE 4 choices, which ones you guys think are the best for my next 1911. Thanks :D

I voted Rock Island - and for clarification - the RIA Government tactical model that is available at CenterFire Systems for under $400. With most of the bells needed, it seems to be the best price / performance deal available.

BEST? I'd have to say the Springfield, although I don't own one and have never fired one, and I own three Rock Islands that I love. I do think the Springers might be a cut above, but I personally would buy a Rock Island Tactical model. But that's just me, and not the question you asked.

Of those 4, I would definitely go with the Dan Wesson Pointman 7. What? That's not on your list? Sorry, my bad, but it should be. Finest 1911 for the money on the market right now. Good luck! :neener:

I agree with bender partially, Dan Wessons are the best 1911 for anyone not willing to spend $2,500 on a pistol. I prefer the commander bobtail tho, comes with night sights. These can be had for $880 if you know where to look, Check the group buy section here. If you can only spend $600 or so, i'd go with the springfield Mil Spec, not the GI unless your lookin for a WWII model weapon. the milspec can be had for just a few dollars more and the upgrades are worth it. I have fired both the GI and the Mil-spec, both great, but the milspec is more of a shooter. The reason for these suggestions is this, you already have a Taurus which I consider to be a low end pistol, if you want to get a "better" pistol, then look at the ones I mentioned.... Rock Island and the other pistols would be a lateral buy IMOP. They are not any better if not worse then a Taurus.

What? That's not on your list?

There's a reason for that... IT COSTS ABOUT A GRAND. of course if i sell all my guns, i can afford a dan wesson, but i'm not about to do that ;)

I shouldnt have said "low end" but what I meant was that you could do better than those models. What exactly is your price range? BTW I am with you on the Kimbers, quite tired of hearing about them.

i am a huge fan and loyalist to sa so of course i am gonna reccomend them, but with that said, ria has the nest value in 1911 around, besides the taurus maybe, but you already have one of those!

so the RIA tactical seems to be brought up a lot. does anyone have an opinion on the charles daly m-5?

I just bought a RIA and am pleased with it so far. Although I have only put 100 rounds through it so far but I did buy it Saturday and have only had one chance to shoot it.

The best choices for me would be the Springfield Armory (had one), and the RIA. You toss the coin.

I know the SA has forged frame and slide while the RIA has a cast frame/machined from barstock slide (according to the many threads I've read) which makes no practical difference.

If you live near Orlando, come to the local Gander Mountain. In the used gun case, there sits a brand new DW PM7 for $799. The guys say it is a "factory second". NONE of us can find anything to suggest a flaw or blemish in the gun. It's beautiful.

So, it's a bit more than your budget. Believe me, I understand budgets.

But I've been where you are, and I DID buy the Springfield GI. Couldn't hit the broadside of a barn - sights are terrible. (Mil-Spec has better sights.) Spent brass casings kept hitting me in the forehead. (Mil-Spec has lowered/polished ejection port.)

I could go on and on. Short story is I took a bath on the GI when I traded it in on a "Loaded" version.

My point is, for a few hundred bucks more, you could buy a well-made "semi custom" gun with all the bells and whistles that could keep you happy for a long, long time.

Just my two cents. Good luck!!

P.S. That PM7 won't be there anymore after this weekend - time for another 1911 for me!!

Rock Island Tactical. Granted, it may be a little under the Springfield quality, but it has other features the SA does not - beavertail, commander hammer, dovetail cut sites (much easier to upgrade than the standard GI sites) - all for $399. I've read nothing but good things about these, and will be adding one to my small collection in the near future.

STI spartan...

$590.00 through dawson precision.

GREAT freaking "cheapie" .45. Best gun per dollar deal on the market imo.

I voted RIA as I love mine.

But as JoeSlomo pointed out, you should look at the STI Spartan. Basically it is a RIA that has been tarted up real nice by the STI folks.

My RIA has been tarted up by me and my gunsmith for more $$$ than the Spartan.
