I would go off the board and pick M1 Garand though obviously not a bolt action. They are drying up through the CMP and I would rather have a good one of them than a good one of the others listed though the 1903 is a close second.

I like the Mauser...tons of history...but, which one doesn't? All are great guns (in some way), check your local shops and see what you find. I agree with everyone about the MN though, not a real keeper for me, but it depends upon what you want it for...but for shooting or looking at=no MN...for a bugger picker or tent pole=MN for the win.

I voted a Lee Enfield, but personally I'd go with the No. 4 MK 1 instead of the No. 1 MK 3. It has much better sights.

A Finn M39 would be an excellent choice too, if you're thinking about a Mosin.

Mosin 91/30 while they are cheap and ammo is still afordable. SHoots straighter than any of the pricey ones/

Moisins are great but you can get one of those anytime. If you can get your hands on a nice 1903A3, that's your baby right there.

You should also consider the US Model of 1917 as well.

the 1903 is cool and everything, but why get a mauser copy thats more expensive, just get a mauser. i know that the springfield may be better than the mauser, but thats nothing i cant change in one afternoon.

That is debateable.

Unless you really got to have the magazine cutoff.

Or you like ugly cocking pieces.:barf:

In what way is it better, other than it is 1.) american 2.) rarer and 3.) fires a more popular cartridge? The 1903 wouldnt exist if the mauser wasnt around to rip off of.

This is some sound advice. Plus parts are abundant. Through the CMP you are guarantees a good bore also when buying a service grade.
Not as cheap as the mosins but they WILL hold their value.
+1 on the 1903 also!!

Nagant. Rifle's still cheap and ammo at aimsurplus is 800 rounds for $150. This is the rifle my great grandkids will be shooting. X
