Figured you guys might like to see my current project. I had and really liked my Remington 597 rifle, and decided it'd be cool to have a pistol, ala Ruger Charger style. Instead of jumping thru the hoops ($$$) of BATFE to cut down a rifle and get it re-registered as a pistol, I decided to build my own receiver from 6061, and use some spare 597 parts, and a few other pieces from other guns.
Here's what I've come up with so far.

If you look closely, you'll notice that the muzzle ends just about 3/8" past the handguard, might thread it for my brake I just made, just for looks, and to add another inch and a half to the OAL.

Still need to mill the bracket for the grip, as well as drill the holes to pin the trigger group in place, as well as just some minor touch up work on the fit. Lastly, after a test firing, I plan to mill a picatinny rail on the top and add a 2x holo sight. What do you guys think?

Long run I am thinking of stippling the smooth areas on the grip, and the recessed smooth areas on the handguard, and maybe painting desert camo using fern leaves and sticks etc to create contrasting foliage look. Or just paint the aluminum black, or use birchwood casey's aluminum black product. I'm not sure which. I think I will try the stippling either way, but unsure if I will go all black with it or go for the desert camo colors with foliage pattern.

I forgot the latest pic, ejection port milled out, going to mill the charging handle slot in the opposite (left) side, so I can keep my right hand on the grip at all times, even when swapping mags or clearing stovepipes.

Latest update:

And here it is with the trunnion fitted, guide rails, bolt and barrel in place.
Still gotta mill the protruding portion into the grip mounting lug, and then pin it solidly into its permanent position. Then it'll be test firing time!
