I haven;t posted in a while and thought I'd post some pictures just for the heck of it. I finished (I think) my AR.

The basics:

Rock River Arms Tactical Operator 2
ARMS 40LSP (had it laying around)
Burris Fullfield Tac30 1-4x
Burris PEPR QD mount
Harris S-BRM 6"-9" Bipod on a G&GG mount w/Alpha-Bravo Bipod lock arm
Magpul AFG2 (I tried to get used to forward grips over the years, but always found myself putting my hand on the rails and pulling back on them, the AFG2 allows for this and gives a slightly more comfortable angle)
Magpul XTM rail covers
***not pictured*** Broken shell extractor, in the battery compartment on the buttstock!

Pretty simple add on parts. I'm very happy with this rifle. I don't shoot 3 gun or anything, but I really like this set up for my leisure shooting. It's shocking how fast parts add up in cost. I have somewhere in the $1600 range in this rifle. I sold the original RRA carrying handle to buy the bipod!

This is an honest question: there is no agenda behind it at all...

I don't know anything about 'tacti-cool' guns other than that they are designed for SHTF kind of scenarios and that they are macho (and look real cool).

Do people use AR10s (I know that is Arma Light and not generic...) for hunting since it uses a hunting caliber (308)?

Are the 223 rounds used for smaller game hunting (like I would use my Mini 14 for example)?

What does 'shoot 3 gun' mean?

I'm not trying to start a fight between hunters and tactical guys, I really am that dumb...

I have thought that if I ever get a 308 I might want it on this kind of platform just so I can say that I have one :)...

I don't hunt, so I won't answer any of the hunting questions.

I have the AR because that's the platform I'm familiar with. I feel comfortable with it after carrying one daily for several years of my life.

"3 gun" is a type of shooting competition.

I like the looks of Rock River's LAR-8's (308's in AR platform), mostly because they use FAL magazines. I also really like the FNAR. I'd like to get one of these one day, but I probably won't consider it for a while.

Hunting with 308

I will hunt with my semi auto 308 if it is for bears, wolves, or coyotes, I like extra quiick follow-up shots, if not I hunt with my 308 bolt gun and a 41 mag back up.

VP, nice stick. I like it. It should do whatever you need it to do. You should try 3 gun.

Thanks gotigers. I'd love to do three gun, but the only day I get off every week is in the middle of the week. Sometimes there isn't a lot to be said about being self-employed.

I like your bipod. I was looking at those recently. I think the concept is neat, the way it folds up and disappears into the weapon. The only other thing I am looking into is a throw lever for my scope. I might just fabricate myself one if I get some extra time instead of spending $90 on one that I don't really need.

I'm not into any fancy ammo. I just shoot M193 or M855. After I shoot off the last of my stash, I am going to get into reloading I hope.

Awesome AR's guys. I had a RRA Tasc Rifle I sold a few years ago. Just like the 7600 Carbine I sold I always regretted selling them. Well I finally got a new 7600 Carbine a few weeks ago. My son (10), my wife and I want another AR. It's not going to happen any time soon. But another RRA is in our future. . . . .especially since my wife wants one! ;)

Very Sweet gun VP. Thanks for the pics.

ExA - For what it's worth, I hunt with my RRA LAR-8, which is RRA's similar version of a AR10. It knocks down stuff real good! Deer and hogs mostly, but I nipped a bobcat last year (not that you would normally shoot one with a .308!!!! But that's what I had when I saw it). They are great guns for so many reasons..

I think what you said plus what I've read (this is the first time I've had the guts to ask the question out loud), I think that when I decide I finally need a 308 (got a 30-06 & 270) then I'll do the research for an AR platform. I don't expect to get all tacticool, but I do like the idea of having a gun that will get me in and out of a fight if the SHTF. Right now (don't laugh...I'm in CA) I have 2 mini14s. I also like what I read in these posts about getting to 'build' it yourself. I'm guessing that means that you get to mix and match parts you like together for a fit.

Exa:

It is only "Tacticool" if you have all that crap, but have no practical use for it. I have 3 ARs. Used for HD, 3 gun and SRS matches. So, each AR is set up appropriately. To be honest. I have no problem with tacticool. If a gun owner likes the accessories, go for it. Besides, it keeps money flowing in the firearm economy, which gives a lot of good folks jobs. I must admit, i am a Magpul junkie, otherwise i like my ARs free of clutter and as light as possible. VP's AR really isn't tacticool IMHO. It looks like it is set up to be very useable.

I have hunted coyotes a few times with my AR. I think AR in .223 is fine for most varmint within a few hundred yards. Maybe even smaller deer.

Thanks Gotigers, that helps. I obviously also don't have a prob with it; for me neither my dad nor my FiL were into it and since that is where I learned it has all been wood and steel for me. Like I said: someday!
Thanks again.

I have a LaRue throw lever base on my RRA, I dont have a good picture of it though.
The bi-pod is a real jewel, it drops the rifle about inche or two lower than a normal bi-pod would.
I built this one to shoot Ground Hogs and Crows up on my Uncles farm in West Virginia, and to do some long range shooting down here.

HavelockLEO, what type of bi pod is that and what did it cost. I have an Elite Operator and I love it. Although I have a cheap bi pod on it at this time.

I love my LAR8 and am very happy that I bought one.

Kind of funny though, last year a buddy of mine was bragging about finally getting his after a 5 month wait (not an Elite Operator, just a reg. one) and the next day I go the Commercial Row at Camp Perry and buy one and bring it home and took it over to show him. Boy was he pissed, especially at the price I got it for and no wait!

haa haa,,,, Wish I had a camera for the look on his face!

Luckily I never said build, just add on parts.

Thanks for not thinking it's tacticool. I'm not down with tacti-cool lol. I was on the fence about putting the bi-pod on it, but I wanted to give it a shot. We used to have a term for guys that did it, and it was gear qu***. I always found that all that most of the garbage did nothing except weigh the rifle down and was great for cool guy pics. Back in those days the only thing I had on my rifle was optics, a Surefire (sometimes) and a PEQ2A.
