An update finally. The gunsmith refunded me the entire amount. Claims that the .260 Remington is not an accurate caliber. I should switch to 7mm-08 or .338 Lapua etc...

However with the kind help of Zak Smith's freinds in France... I now have this and new friends as well:

IMGP0324.jpg

Its a Savage 10 FP with a 27.5 inch Lothar Walther Barrel 1:8 .260 Remington.
HS Precision Stock, Accutrigger, a Ken Farrel Piccatany rail.

For the time being have mounted a Bushnell Elite 3-9x to sort out the ammunition. :D:D:D

Range Report tomorrow...

they sell WD-40 in France??;)

I think you'll come back from the range with a big smile on your face. You should shoot some great groups with your sub $1000 rifle and mail them to that unmentionable custom maker who says 260 isn't accurate.:neener:

Oh its a lot more than $1000 in France. All togehter it set me back about 1400 Euro's.

The world is lubricated by WD40... :)

I'm glad you were made whole by the gun plumber. The new rig should do the trick. I'm 50/50 with gunsmiths. One I made buy my barrel he butchered and the other didn't pay me what my shotgun he mangled was worth. Now I do all my own work. Cheers.

wow!!!! I am really liking that stock, really looks like it was tailor-made from the factory, just for that rig...what was the stock cost on that, any idea for american dollars , ballpark?

I think you`re going to be one happy shooter!
Don`t forget, if the ammo you have was shot in the other rifle it should be full sized to insure it will fit in this new chamber. I`d check it before running to the range and finding it doesn`t fit.

Rangerruck,

Dont know individual component prices. Stuff costs about double that in the US.

Ol'Joe Yes I know. Have already loaded ammo using new cases for tomorrow. And am happily pulling apart ammo, and Full Re-sizing annealing on the empties.

You got an idiot for a gunsmith.

Tell David Tubb the .260 isn't accurate. He's only used it to win a number of National Championships over here.

tubb shoots a .260? i thought he was shooting the 6mmXC

afy, glad you got the situation squared away.

Love my .260! #2 right behind the .223AI, followed by the .308 and 300WM.

Mine also based on a Savage/Stevens action I built on (top is .260):

Afy, I think your aggravation is behind you now. The LW barrel is a winner. That's a nice looking rig and should be a favorite of yours. At least the previous smith made it right money-wise but that's little consolation for what you went through.
Happy shooting!

That's a good looking rig Afy, hope it soots as good as it looks. You should be in good shape now with it, the .260 is about as accurate as they come, I really like the 6's and 6.5's for long range shooting.

Jst1mr: I use WD 40 to store my blackpowder guns when I am not going to shoot them for a while. Otherwwise I use Olive Oil on them.
My Smokeless guns dont come near WD 40.

I am off to the range in few minutes. Will report back in a few hours. :):):)

The Frustration continues....

I pulled the scope a Bushnell 3-9x50 from my .222 RM which has always been a picky shooter. Good groups one day... spray the next, along with the mounts and put them on the .260. (My Leupold is still with the old gunsmith)

So I load up at 100 Meters, aim at the center of a sheet and fire. Impact of the factory Federal 140 grain Gameking is about 9 inches to the right and 10 inches below POA. So I adjust to that point... and shoot the second shot with the first as the POA.

POI is now 6 inches to the left and about 3 inches High. Re-adjust and shoot again... its moved again. After the first ten I am out of Factory loads and switch to hand loads. 139gr Scenar over 37.5 gr of VV N150, and 123 gr Scenar over 37.1 gr of VV N160.
The first thirty odd shots have gone chasing the POI.

At which point I have only another 20 shots left. So I pick a POA and let off.
With the 139 and 123 gr am getting groups of slightly under 1 inch about 6 inches to the right and 5-7 inches low from POI. Even with the broken scope and non-tuned loads it is getting sub-MOA off both a bipod with no rear rest and a bench (MTM plastic) that doesnt fit is correctly.

I do know the Bushnell is toast, and would also explain the behaviour of my .222 RM. Which would shoot one group sub 1/2 MOA with factory ammo and then spray the next one to 2 MOA.

So at this point have pulled my Weaver4.5-14x40 from my .300 WM and am headed back tomorrow.

Long and short of it... The rifle is accurate. More accurate than I probably will be. However I need to sort out my scope issue and get a rear bag for the bipod or even a monopod.

Loading up another batch of ammo right now and heading back tomorrow morning.
:D:D

Afy,

FWIW My .260 shoots 4350 to half the group size of N-160 at 300 yards. See my post in your older .260 thread. I could not believe how much tighter the IMR4350 shot.

Did you have any luck with Chombart or Jackson?

Howard, I'm sure Afy would love to be able to try other powders such as 4350 but they are nearly impossible to obtain in France. He has a limited choice of powders to work with. C'est la vie! We'll have to wait and see how he does tomorrow.

Make sure your barrel is on tight too. I didn't get my barrel nut snugged down the first time and after 20 or 30 rounds it came loose and the groups opened up. It still shot better than your other .260 though.

range report

Back from the range...
only managed five groups.

The results are here:

[ IMGP0331.jpg

This off a bipod with no rear support. I seem to pulling a shot somehwere along the line. Have noticed this with my .300 as well. Anyhow onto load development.

Then tragedy struck. Evidently a case that had not been full resized had become mixed into my loading done in a hurry last night which proceeded to lock my bolt up good. I couldnt open or close the bolt... and in the process of trying to do it... caught my hand on the weaver mounts.

IMGP0329.jpg

Luckily its only superficial.

I am pretty happy with the rifle currently, and do need to sort my loads out. Would appreciate any loads with SMK/Scenar's and Vitavouri or Tubal powders. Those are the only ones available here.

Sorry about your hand. All in all, the rifle is showing potential. All the shots, including the factory loads are under an inch from my estimation. It will probably tighten up more as it breaks in and as you search for the best load. Do you have any access to Norma components? They have some great powders and bullets for 6.5's. Good luck!

I think it would help you with load development if you would lose the bipod, and just shoot off bags. Go back to the bipod after you find your load.
