I'm not 100% sure this is the right place for this type of thread but some others suggested I make a build thread for the BP Pistol I'm making my dad for Christmas. This IS NOT a How-To. I reccomend NO ONE try making a gun from scratch as it is dangerous if not done properly.

My background:
I'm a toolmaker apprentice (not a Journeyman yet) and heve access to the proper metal cutting tools. I also have access to a dozen of the best toolmaker journeymen and engineers in the area including some who have worked at Remington. I plan on over engineering everything to hold up to repeated firing to be reliable and most importantly SAFE. It wont be pretty, but should have some form to it.

So here goes with the pictures and small descriptions from each process.

Here is my first step in the process. Its the "Receiver" part. The barrel will screw into the end im drilling this step. More pics to follow.

And yes, I do have invisible center drills.

Roughing it out on the mill.

Roughed out. I've still got to use a smaller mill to finish up the corners and to mill the trigger pocket. One step at a time.

Update 3 is the trigger slot is now milled. Im going to work on a hammer and trigger tomorrow. I still need to buy some round balls to measure what my barrel will be reamed to. Not looking for more that 15 grains of BP to be put through.

Got the barrel threads tapped and roughed out a hammer. One day I'll have more than 20 minutes to work on it.

I got the barrel threaded for both the receiver and nipple. Its 1" 4140 steel stock.

And thats it for today.

It looks like the project is off to a great start. My dad was a tool and die man. I wish I had paid a bit more attention to him when he was trying to teach me some stuff.

Keep up the work and the flow of pictures.

First time barrel mated to receiver. It sits flush now. As soon as I figure out what outside diameter I want the barrel, I'll mill a recess pocket into the receiver.

Yeah that's the basic idea. I've got a background in Paintball and quite a few markers are inline hammer designs.

Keep us updated. I hope to attend a JC where I can acquire machinist skills.

So the large opening is to be able to set the cap in place?

Some day I'm hoping to make a rifled barrel BP single shot using a box lock style inline hammer. But I'll likely pattern it more or less after the Remington rolling block shape of receiver just so the cap is easy to access.
